Reading tips
- Read a few chapters first to absorb the local atmosphere of Fushan; don't rush the plot—focus on the scenery and everyday details.
- When you reach episodes about the abolition of the agricultural tax or the allocation of land to individual households, compare them with the historical background you know and feel how policy landed on individuals.
- Best read slowly, a chapter or two a day; afterward, reflect on why the characters fight and compare that with rural changes in reality.

About the author
Liu Binglian is an author about whom limited public information is available; only one work by this name can currently be identified, the social novel Huaxu Luo (roughly, "Fragments of Gossamer"). As no clear records of biography, nationality, or dates of birth and death have been found, a full account of the author's writing career is difficult to sketch. Judging from the classification of Huaxu Luo, however, the writing draws on social reality and tends to present, in novel form, the various entanglements between people and between individuals and their surroundings. The word "huaxu" in the title carries a sense of scattered observations and fragments of life, perhaps suggesting an emphasis on everyday detail rather than grand narrative. Overall, Liu Binglian's creative profile awaits further disclosure, and readers may through this work appreciate the author's attention to social themes and narrative interest.
