Summary

This book gathers the academic writings and clinical insights of Hu Xishu (1898–1984), a renowned modern master of classical formula (jingfang) practice and education in traditional Chinese medicine. Born in Shenyang, Liaoning, Hu studied medicine in his youth under Wang Xiangzheng, a jinshi of the late Qing and a famous physician; in 1919 he obtained his TCM practitioner certificate, practiced in Beijing around 1931, and co-founded TCM education with veteran physicians Chen Shenwu and Xie Haizhou. In 1952 he opened the Beijing Private TCM School, and in 1958 he was transferred to the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine as professor of internal medicine and academic committee advisor at its affiliated Dongzhimen Hospital. Academically, Hu argued that the six channels (liujing) of the Shanghan Lun are not the meridian-and-organ concepts of the Neijing but derive from the eight principles (bagang); he proposed that classical formula medicine is the Shennong–Yiyin decoction school with its own theoretical system; and clinically he emphasized "first differentiate the six channels and eight principles, then differentiate the formula pattern," coining the saying "the formula pattern is the apex of pattern differentiation." Recordings of his lectures were later compiled by his students into works including Hu Xishu's Lectures on the Shanghan Lun, Hu Xishu's Lectures on the Jingui Yaolue, and Classical Formulas Revealed, which have influenced practitioners in both China and Japan; the Japanese TCM community called him "a researcher of the Shanghan Lun and classical formula master with a unique theoretical system in China." This book helps readers systematically grasp his approach to the six channels, eight principles, and formula-pattern differentiation.

Editor's review

Reading tips
