Summary

Since the 1950s, Lévi-Strauss and the structuralism he founded stunned all of Europe and gradually grew into a far-reaching social current of thought—philosophical, yes, but also anthropological, sociological, psychological, literary and artistic, and even part of everyday lived experience. It represents a new system of thought and method for understanding the entire world, human society, and history. Gao Xuanyang's Structuralism (Hardcover) surveys its origins, formation, and development and its links to various disciplines, guiding us into the highly revolutionary, rich, and fascinating center of structuralist worldview and methodology.

Editor's review

This is a scholarly work that systematically surveys the structuralist current of thought. Starting from structuralism's origins, formation, and development, the author explains how Lévi-Strauss and the structuralism he founded stunned Europe from the 1950s onward and gradually expanded into a far-reaching current spanning philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, literature and the arts, and even everyday lived experience. The book's strength lies in not narrowing structuralism to the method of a single discipline but presenting it as a new system of thought and research method, helping readers understand why it is revolutionary and why it produced chain reactions across disciplines. For readers seeking entry into this complex field, the book offers a relatively complete map of its development. When reading, it is advisable to follow two threads: first, the specific connections between structuralism and various disciplines; second, the commonalities and differences among its methodological claims. The book involves many figures and concepts, so slow reading and note-taking are recommended, with comparison to passages from primary works as needed.

  3. Slow down when encountering core concepts, and compare them with relevant passages from primary works or class notes

FAQ

Can I understand this book without a philosophy background?
It will be somewhat difficult. The book surveys structuralism and its connections to multiple disciplines and involves many theoretical figures and concepts. It is advisable to first have a general humanities and social science foundation or to consult relevant introductory materials alongside it. You need not grasp every detail on a first reading; first grasp the overall development and methodological claims, then gradually go deeper into specific chapters.
Why has structuralism influenced so many disciplines?
According to the book's approach, structuralism is not merely a set of philosophical claims but a new system of thought and research method. After Lévi-Strauss founded it in the 1950s, it stunned Europe; because its methodology can be transferred across disciplines, it produced chain reactions in anthropology, sociology, psychology, literature and the arts, and even everyday lived experience.
What is the relationship between this book and primary works on structuralism?
This book is a survey-style scholarly work focused on sorting out structuralism's origins, formation, and development and its connections to various disciplines, helping readers build an overall understanding rather than replacing primary works. A suitable approach is to first use this book to gain a map of its development, then choose a figure or disciplinary direction of interest and return to relevant passages in primary works for deeper reading.
