Summary

The Application of Classical Formulas is a work on Cold Damage and the Essentials of the Golden Cabinet co-compiled by Wang Qi, Sheng Zengxiu, Jiang Houwen, Jiang Jingxian, and others, published by Ningxia People's Publishing House in 1981. The book collects over one hundred formulas from Treatise on Cold Damage and Essentials of the Golden Cabinet—commonly recorded as 101, though some sources give 100. For each formula it first notes the original source, then introduces in turn the composition, usage, effects, indications, formula analysis, clinical application, commentary, review or experimental research, and precautions, forming a complete narrative chain from original text to clinical practice and from theory to verification. A major feature of the book is its extensive gathering of the classical-formula experience of such renowned teachers of the national Chinese medicine research class as Yue Meizhong, Zhao Xiwu, Wang Wending, Ren Yingqiu, and Liu Duzhou; this experience is mostly presented as one case with one discussion or one formula with one discussion, focusing on the key points of pattern identification and the reasoning behind modifications. The book also excerpts verified cases of classical-formula use by earlier scholars, relevant reports from modern journals, and experimental research on classical formulas as well as foreign research materials, giving the clinical value of classical formulas corroboration from a modern medical perspective. As a representative popularizing work on classical formulas from the early 1980s, the book bears a distinct mark of its time: it respects Zhang Zhongjing's original formulas and methods while not rejecting experimental research or foreign experience. It is of great reference value for readers studying Treatise on Cold Damage and Essentials of the Golden Cabinet in understanding the practical meaning of "formula corresponding to pattern" and grasping the extended application of classical formulas in miscellaneous diseases, and it is a book often mentioned in studies of the modern academic history of classical formulas.

Editor's review

Reading tips
