Summary

This novel is set against the Chinese Communist Party's activities in Shanghai from 1930 to 1934, focusing on how a capitalist's daughter moves from being a student at St. John's University toward revolution and fights at the risk of her life to protect the Party's red archives. Its central plot is drawn from Party history: the Party Central Committee relocates to the Soviet area, leaving behind a secret documents vault guarded by underground Party members. The book received major literary creation project funding from the Shanghai Culture Development Foundation in 2020. The main plot concerns Chen Huimei, a St. John's University student whose father, Chen Guangzong, is kidnapped; with help from Han Tianqiang, an underground CCP member, she actively joins the May First parade and is arrested. Chen Guangzong hires a lawyer to free his daughter and forces her to marry Xu Chengsheng, the son of a family of equal social standing. Chen Huimei runs away from home, marries Han Tianqiang, and becomes a CCP member.

Li Jianxiong leads Han Tianqiang and others in pursuit of the traitor Liu Junren, who under a false identity has taken the Party Central Committee funds sent from the Soviet area; Chen Huimei assists the operation, and the traitor is eventually shot dead and the funds recovered. After Gu Shunzhang's defection, Han Tianqiang covers the Central Committee leaders' transfer to the Soviet area. Chen Huimei, now pregnant, is assigned to remain in Shanghai and work at the secret documents vault guarded by Zhang Zhiren and Li Ying, and soon gives birth to a daughter, Xiaomei. Li Ying is unfortunately arrested, the secret documents vault is hastily relocated, and contact with the Party organization is lost. Chen Huimei and Zhang Zhiren search actively for the organization; several years pass, their funds run out, and they find themselves in dire straits.

Editor's review

Hong Lian is a novel by Zou Ping that focuses on individual destiny and emotional entanglement during China's contemporary social transformation. With delicate strokes, the author builds a stage set against the tide of reform and opening up, where the protagonists face violent collisions among ideals, love, family, and reality in the flood of the times. This book is not a simple love narrative; rather, it closely interweaves the micro-experience of individual emotion with macro-social change, profoundly revealing the complexity and resilience of human nature in a specific historical context.

As an editor, I believe the core reading value of Hong Lian lies in its strong sense of historical depth and authentic characterization. Zou Ping's writing style is steady and full of tension; he excels at accumulating emotional impact through the details of daily life, letting readers feel the surging power of fate within seemingly gentle narration. The use of the "red" image in the book is ingenious: it is both a metaphor for the underlying color of the revolutionary era and a symbol of passion, sacrifice, and transformation. This ambiguity provides rich space for interpretation.

Compared with works on similar themes, Hong Lian avoids stereotyped praise or criticism and instead presents ordinary people's struggles and choices in the crevices of the times from an eye-level perspective. This restrained and sincere narrative attitude is especially valuable. For readers who wish to understand changes in the emotional structure of contemporary Chinese society, this book offers a vivid and profound literary sample. It shows us that behind grand historical narratives, individual love and pain are equally worthy of serious writing.

About the author

邹平 Author

Zou Ping is an author about whom little public information is available. To date, one work is known under this name: Hong Lian (Red Love), classified under war and military fiction. Because details of the author's life, nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background are lacking, it is difficult to trace a full writing career or to place Hong Lian within it. Judging from the existing category, the work is set against a background of military life and war and may interweave wartime romance with the fate of its characters; the words "red" and "love" in the title also suggest that an emotional thread carries some weight in the narrative. With only one work available, it is not yet possible to describe a consistent style or overall influence, and readers who wish to understand the author's writing must still turn to the text of Hong Lian itself.
