Summary

A Seventh Man is an illustrated book by the British writer and art critic John Berger and the Swiss photographer Jean Mohr, first published in English by Verso Books in 1975. The book mixes poetry, statistics, reportage, economic and sociological analysis, and the first-person account of a migrant worker referred to as "he," seeking to portray a hidden reality of 1960s Europe: the heavy dependence of prosperous countries, during the postwar economic expansion, on foreign laborers from less developed regions such as Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Yugoslavia. The "seventh man" is not a specific individual but an anonymous existence processed away by statistics and policy: they build roads, clean buildings, repeat motions on assembly lines, yet are almost invisible in the public life of their host countries. Jean Mohr's black-and-white photographs resemble both public documentary reportage and intimate family albums, recording departure platforms, dormitory beds, brief reunions with visiting families, and repeatedly deferred plans to return home; Berger's text interweaves among these images, asking about the relationships among labor, homeland, the body, and dignity. The Chinese edition was translated by Liu Zhangbolong, produced by Imaginist, and published by China Academy of Art Press in 2019 in the "Imaginist · John Berger Works" series. Some statistics in the book are already more than forty years old, yet the author's observations on migrants' situation in a foreign land and on the costs of "development" can still be set against the experiences of today's migrant workers and new urban migrants.

Editor's review

Reading tips

About the publisher

China Academy of Art Press China · Founded in 1985

China Academy of Art Press is a professional institution centered on art publishing. Grounded in fine arts and oriented toward the broader field of art, it mainly publishes art textbook series and art theory series. Although the library contains only three titles, they clearly reflect its editorial orientation: Robert Hughes's The Shock of the New, Zha Changping's A History of Avant-Garde Art Thought, and Simon Schama's The Power of Art approach modern art history, avant-garde art concepts, and art criticism respectively, balancing theoretical depth and readability. In terms of authors, the press brings together art historians, critics, and intellectual historians, forming a publishing profile focused on art theory and visual culture. Because public information is limited, its overall product line and series structure cannot yet be fully outlined, but the existing titles show that the press emphasizes contemporary expression of the artistic spirit and the quality of visual reading, maintaining a balance between art education and academic communication.

About the author

John Berger was an author whose writing moved between art criticism and literature. Public information about him is limited, and his dates, nationality, and full biography are not known here, but the ten works in this collection show that his writing spans theory, foreign literature, and photography. He discussed the meaning of photography and the ways of seeing, as in Understanding a Photograph, Another Way of Telling, and Photocopies, and he also worked in narrative and essay forms, as in The Storyteller, Here Is Where We Meet, The Sense of Sight, and Pig Earth. His texts often place images, memory, and everyday experience side by side, attending to the social and emotional meanings behind looking. His concise, reflective style has had a lasting influence on readers of photography writing and art essays.
