Summary

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind is a collection of talks given by the Japanese Sōtō Zen master Shunryu Suzuki (1904–1971) to his students during sitting meditation at the San Francisco Zen Center, compiled into book form by his Western disciples under the original English title Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. The book follows the sequence of meditation instruction and is divided into three parts—"Right Practice," "Right Attitude," and "Right Understanding"—comprising more than thirty short chapters. It begins with the most concrete matters: how to place the body in sitting meditation, how to focus on the breath, and how to relate to the constant arising of discursive thoughts and emotional fluctuations. Suzuki holds that the posture of sitting is not for attaining some particular state but for allowing the original nature of body and mind to manifest naturally; thoughts need not be suppressed but allowed to come and go, so that one is no longer pulled along by them. From posture and breathing the book moves on to the repetition of "one thing at a time," the way of acting "leaving no trace," right effort and common pitfalls in Zen practice, and then to core Zen propositions such as impermanence, emptiness, the nature of existence, and non-dualism—advancing layer by layer in plain language with almost no accumulation of jargon. A key word running throughout is "beginner's mind"—the beginner's mind is empty and full of possibilities, while the veteran's mind is often crammed with preconceptions. Suzuki repeatedly reminds us that practice is not about achieving anything but about returning to here and now, making daily life itself the training ground. The book is regarded as an important introduction to Eastern Zen practice for the Western world and has been read continuously for over half a century. In August 2025, Chongqing Publishing House released a new Chinese translation by Zhang Guochen and Li Yingsong.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
