Summary

This book is Professor Chen Sihe's latest chronological collection, gathering sixty-six long and short articles he has written in recent years. The title uses the homophone "lulu" (busy and ordinary), obliquely reflecting the author's working state and writing output in recent years. It is divided into six sections: "Miscellaneous Discussions on Literature and History," "Informal Talks on Arts and Letters," "Passionate Recollections," "Literature Classroom," "Alternative Readings of Language and Literature," and "Stories from the Bookshelf." It includes professional literary criticism and lyrical essays, as well as close reading and detailed explanation of classic texts in modern literary history and middle school Chinese textbooks, and in-depth thinking and ideas about library development. The content is rich and thought-provoking, reflecting the integrity and sense of responsibility of an intellectual.

Editor's review

Lulu Ji is a collection of academic essays by Mr. Chen Sihe, a senior professor of humanities at Fudan University and a renowned scholar, gathering his articles and speeches from recent years. This book is not a tightly systematic monograph, but the crystallization of the author's reflections alongside academic research, teaching and educating people, and cultural observation, showing the spiritual trajectory and daily concerns of a humanistic scholar. The title "Lulu" is modest yet profound: it refers both to the busyness of daily work and implicitly to the expectation that intellectuals should hold fast to their proper role and work steadily amid the currents of the times.

In terms of content, the book covers a wide range, including in-depth interpretations of modern literary giants such as Lu Xun and Ba Jin, keen observations of contemporary cultural phenomena and educational issues, and warm records of the author's interactions with friends and students. Mr. Chen Sihe's writing continues his consistent style—plain, sincere, and thoughtful. There is no pileup of obscure terminology; instead, profound insights are conveyed in an easy, conversational manner. Readers can feel a senior scholar's reverence for scholarship, responsibility for culture, and love of life.

The reading value of this book lies in the window it provides for a close look at the intellectual world of a top humanistic scholar. It is not only a sharing of academic views, but also a demonstration of scholarly attitude and humanistic spirit. For readers in an era of information overload and plural values, this calm, focused, and humanistically caring thinking is especially precious. It reminds us that amid the "lulu" of daily life, maintaining independence of thought and spiritual richness is equally important.
