Summary

(Your servant) et al. respectfully note: Shichu Ji in ten juan, by Zhou Tingzhen of the Yuan. Tingzhen, courtesy name Hengyuan, a native of Ancheng. Because his ancestors lived at Tianxi in Shimen, he styled himself Shitian Zichu; abbreviating this, he called himself Shichu. In his early years he applied himself deliberately to learning, often associating with the surviving elders of the Song and obtaining their transmitted views. In the Yanyou era, when the examination system was instituted, he sat twice without success, and thereafter shut his door and devoted himself wholly to poetry and ancient-style prose. This collection was compiled by Yan Bi of Luling.

Editor's review

Shichu Ji is a collection of poetry and prose by Zhou Tingzhen of the Yuan dynasty. The ten-juan edition, compiled by Yan Bi of Luling, was reprinted in 2024, offering modern readers a reliable text through which to glimpse the mentality of grassroots literati in the late Yuan and the local literary tradition. In his early years Zhou Tingzhen studied under the surviving elders of the Song; after repeatedly failing the examinations he shut his door and devoted himself to poetry and ancient-style prose. This experience gives the collection's works both the lingering tone of Song loyalists and the self-examination and heaviness of a man defeated by the Yuan examination system. The poems and prose mostly concern the local customs and social circles of the Ancheng area and can supplement gaps in the official histories; they are of reference value for studying Jiangxi literati networks in the Yuan, the practical operation of the examination system, and the choices of literati on the threshold of dynastic change. The writing is unadorned yet retains its own strength of character, suited to slow and careful reading. This edition helps readers grasp the basic character of a Yuan literatus's collected works and may also serve as auxiliary material for research on Yuan regional literature and literati mentality. Readers should combine it with the history of the Yuan examinations and the Song-Yuan transition to appreciate the era's flavor behind the author's decision to shut his door and write.

FAQ

How did Shichu Ji get its title?
According to the collection, Zhou Tingzhen's ancestors lived at Tianxi in Shimen; he styled himself Shitian Zichu, and dropping the characters left Shichu, from which the title derives. The sobriquet also reveals his identification with his ancestral place and his own inclinations; while reading, note the resonance between the sobriquet and the style of the poems and prose.
How did Zhou Tingzhen's examination failures affect the collection's contents?
Sources show that he sat twice in the Yanyou era without success and then shut his door to devote himself to poetry and ancient-style prose. The works carry the self-examination and heaviness of a failed literatus and focus on local customs and literati society rather than official or examination compositions; read them in light of the actual admission rates of the Yuan examinations.
How can general readers approach this Yuan collection?
Begin with shorter poems and with prefaces and records to sense the unadorned style that retains its own strength; then use the prefaces and postfaces to understand the editorial sequence. If your classical Chinese is limited, consult a survey of Yuan literary history and reference works for allusions, and proceed gradually.
