Summary

The Real Japan is a collection of cultural essays by the writer Chen Xiwo, who once studied in Japan and taught courses on Japanese literature at university. The book does not set out to portray a "beautiful" or "lovely" Japan; instead, starting from everyday details, it seeks to dissect the contradictions and complexities of Japanese society and national character. It begins with seemingly light topics—cherry blossoms, the kimono, the tea ceremony, food, and popular culture—and gradually moves toward weightier themes: attitudes toward life and death, the culture of apology, bullying, the claim of "shared script and shared race," the Tokyo Trial, and the social psychology of postwar Japan. Using the metaphor of "furoshiki culture," the author illustrates the soft, accommodating, and endlessly adaptable nature of Japanese culture, and on that basis explores its duality—oscillating between aesthetic refinement and militarism, courtesy and aggression, reform and stubbornness. The writing is direct, charged with strong personal judgments and emotion. The author also concedes that any statement inevitably carries bias, and that the very notion of "real" may itself be an illusion. The book is thus less a steady, balanced introduction to a country than a sharp-edged inquiry.

Editor's review

Reading tips
