Summary

Day & Night tells the story of Yi, 24, simple, free and independent, who graduates from law school, passes the New York State bar exam, and lands her first job at a Manhattan law firm. In late summer that same year, she meets Lyle Alton, 34, the son of a wealthy family, at a cocktail party. Two people of different native languages, nationalities, ages, classes and life experiences move from playing games to taking each other seriously, yet though they love each other, they do not truly know each other. They marry because of Yi's unexpected pregnancy, and soon separate amid all kinds of conflicts in daily life. After the divorce, as they raise their daughter together, they gradually adjust to each other, come to understand each other, and begin trying to change for the sake of a shared life. As the book's closing lines say: I don't know where we will end up, and I'm not sure what it is I really want. Maybe we are still not right for each other, and maybe this new relationship will end the same way. By then, perhaps it really will be over between us. That is how it is—a deep sense of helplessness.

Editor's review

Day & Night is an urban romance by Chen Zhiyao that traces, with delicate strokes, the entanglement and growth of modern urban men and women as they navigate love and career. Its most distinctive feature is a dual narrative structure built around the images of "day" and "night," which respectively symbolize the protagonist's rational restraint in the workplace and her emotional release in private life—a structure that itself serves as a metaphor for the shuttling and splitting of contemporary people among multiple social roles. Chen Zhiyao's prose is cool and precise, her psychological portraiture incisive, and she excels at burying surging emotional undercurrents within seemingly ordinary daily dialogue. In terms of reading value, the book transcends a simple love story; it is more like a mirror reflecting the loneliness, compromise, and search for an authentic self beneath the polished surface of the urban elite. Its exploration of workplace ecology, intimate relationships, and personal worth carries a certain real-world penetration and can prompt readers to reflect on their own lives. Some plot developments, however, rely a little too much on coincidence, and the turns in the characters' relationships are occasionally somewhat melodramatic—something to bear in mind while reading. Overall, this is a highly accomplished urban novel with literary texture and intellectual depth.
