About the author
Feng Jie, about whom relatively limited public information is available, writes across military history, essays and miscellaneous prose, biography and social fiction; six of his works are included in this collection. He is equally at home in archival and battlefield detail—Steel War: A History of Chinese Field Artillery, 1900–1937 traces the development of Chinese field artillery in the early twentieth century—and in everyday and local experience, as shown by A Strolling Handbook of Life in Dongjing Kaifeng, Carp Turning the Bend, Painting Sentences and A Boy Keeps Bees. These works display a flexible style that combines the ease of the essay with narrative warmth. Li Hongzhang in the Late Qing further reflects his sustained interest in late Qing figures and their historical context. Overall, Feng Jie balances documentary research with personal expression, and his wide-ranging subjects will appeal to readers interested in military history, local life and late Qing personalities.
