Summary

This textbook consists of 12 chapters, covering the Introduction, basic cell functions, blood, blood circulation, respiration, digestion and absorption, energy metabolism, body temperature, urine formation and excretion, functions of the sensory organs, the nervous system, the endocrine system, and reproduction. It strives for scientifically advanced, accurate, and applicable content with some innovation in format. It closely follows teaching standards and the latest industry standards in selecting content, aligns with actual job requirements, and is richly illustrated to facilitate teaching and learning. In structure and content, it simplifies the complex, highlights key points, updates concepts, and adds content such as regulation of vesicular transport, diversity of platelet responses, the 2013 European blood pressure classification standards (ESH/ESC), sleep apnea and sleep apnea syndrome, intestinal potassium absorption, glycemic index, liver physiology, gut microbiota, factors affecting renal sympathetic nerve activity, and the human follicular development cycle. This textbook is suitable for students majoring in Traditional Chinese Medicine Orthopedics and Traumatology at higher vocational and technical colleges.

Editor's review

This textbook offers complete coverage, moving from basic cell functions to twelve chapters on blood, circulation, respiration, digestion and absorption, energy metabolism and body temperature, the urinary system, sensory organs, the nervous system, the endocrine system, and reproduction, with a clear structure. A notable feature is that while maintaining the basic framework of physiology, it incorporates updated points such as regulation of vesicular transport, diversity of platelet responses, new standards for blood pressure classification, sleep apnea, intestinal potassium absorption, glycemic index, liver physiology, gut microbiota, factors affecting renal sympathetic nerve activity, and the human follicular development cycle, reflecting the connection between content and industry standards and job requirements. The format is richly illustrated and concise, with key points highlighted, facilitating classroom teaching and after-class review. As a textbook for higher vocational and technical college students majoring in TCM orthopedics and traumatology, it emphasizes sufficiency, practicality, and connection with subsequent courses. It is suitable for systematic study according to teaching progress, and also for exam preparation or for clinical practitioners verifying basic concepts.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Students enrolled in higher vocational and technical colleges majoring in TCM orthopedics and traumatology, studying in sync with coursework
  • Examinees preparing for physiology-related exams or make-up exams who need to systematically organize their knowledge framework
  • Primary-level TCM orthopedics and traumatology practitioners verifying basic physiological concepts and common indicators
  • Self-learners who need a clearly structured, visually intuitive introductory physiology textbook

Not a good fit for

  • Readers hoping to study in depth the latest research advances and experimental methods in physiology
  • Readers at the undergraduate level or above in clinical medicine who need more detailed mechanistic reasoning
  • People who only want to understand common health-preservation knowledge and do not plan to study physiology systematically

Reading tips

  1. First read through the table of contents to establish the twelve-chapter framework, then read each chapter closely according to teaching progress, avoiding skipping around.
  2. After each chapter, draw a one-page mechanistic flowchart to memorize structure-function correspondence.
  3. Annotate the updated concepts and standards in the book and compare them with older materials to clarify differences.
  4. After class, re-read key chapters relevant to the orthopedics and traumatology major (such as blood, nerves, and sensory organs).

FAQ

Is this book only for students majoring in TCM orthopedics and traumatology?
The textbook is positioned for higher vocational and technical college students majoring in TCM orthopedics and traumatology, and the chapter arrangement is closely connected with subsequent courses in that major, so it is most suitable for students in that major. However, the content itself is general physiological knowledge, and students in other medicine-related majors or self-learners can also use it as an introductory textbook, though some examples and emphases may not fully match their own professional needs.
Do the updated contents mentioned in the book require additional reference materials?
The textbook has already incorporated updated points such as regulation of vesicular transport, diversity of platelet responses, blood pressure classification standards, sleep apnea, and gut microbiota into the main text, so additional reference materials are not needed for normal study. If you want to understand a concept in greater depth, you may consult authoritative physiology monographs or reviews, but the textbook should remain the main line of study to avoid deviating from course requirements.
Can someone without a medical foundation read this textbook directly?
Yes, but it requires some patience. The textbook is concise and richly illustrated, lowering the difficulty of entry, but physiological concepts are strongly interconnected. It is recommended to read in chapter order, spend more time on foundational chapters such as cell function and blood circulation, and, when necessary, study alongside classroom instruction or basic anatomy knowledge.
