Editor's review

Biology Through the Ages is a popular science book co-authored by Xiao Dongfa and Yu Haiwen that guides readers, in clear and accessible prose, through the long journey of life's evolution on Earth. Rather than merely listing biological facts, it skilfully weaves together palaeontology, geology and ecology into a grand tapestry of life's history. Xiao Dongfa, a seasoned science writer, excels at turning complex scientific concepts into plain narrative, while Yu Haiwen's solid biology background ensures scientific rigour. The book runs from the Cambrian explosion through the age of dinosaurs to the emergence of humans, its thread clear and its tone both informative and narrative. Particularly noteworthy is the wealth of Chinese palaeontological discoveries woven throughout, such as the Chengjiang fossil beds in Yunnan and the Jehol Biota in Liaoning, which bring the content closer to home. Reading this book not only gives a systematic understanding of the key milestones in evolution but also conveys the power of natural selection and the resilience of life's continuity. For readers hoping to broaden their horizons and understand the origin and evolution of life, it is a rare introductory gem.

Who it's for

  • Secondary school or adult readers interested in palaeontology and the history of life's evolution
  • Popular science enthusiasts seeking a systematic understanding of the trajectory of life's evolution on Earth
  • Readers who enjoy interdisciplinary thinking that combines geological change with biological development
  • Self-learners looking for an introductory book that is both scientifically rigorous and readable

Not a good fit for

  • Researchers expecting in-depth specialist academic discussion or the latest research frontiers
  • Visual-oriented readers seeking large numbers of colour reconstructions or fossil specimen atlases

Reading tips

  1. Mark the major Chinese fossil sites mentioned in the book on a map to strengthen spatial understanding
  2. After each chapter, use a timeline to sort out the appearance and extinction events of major biological groups
  3. Connect the evolution of life with contemporaneous geological and climatic change to understand the co-evolution of environment and organisms

FAQ

What distinguishes this book from similar popular science titles?
The book highlights Chinese features, citing numerous major palaeontological discoveries and research cases from within China and integrating the global framework of life's evolution with domestic scientific achievements, offering a cognitive path different from a Western-centred perspective.
Does the content cover human evolution?
Yes. The final section covers the evolutionary journey from ancient apes to Homo sapiens, though relatively concisely, focusing on outlining the main line rather than discussing anthropological controversies in detail.
Is prior biological knowledge required?
No. The authors explain technical terms in plain language and include explanations of basic concepts, making it suitable for readers with no background. Secondary-school biology knowledge would make certain mechanisms easier to follow.
