Often referred to in Chinese online circles as Between Life and Death, The Death of Death is a six-issue miniseries published by DC Comics between 2004 and 2005, collected in Toe Tags Featuring George Romero #1–6. It was written by George A. Romero, the master of the zombie film, with pencils by Tommy Castillo, inks by Rodney Ramos, and covers by horror artist Bernie Wrightson. The story grew out of a sequel script Romero had written years earlier for his Living Dead film series but was never able to produce: overnight the world is turned upside down as the dead wander in hordes and human order collapses. Professor Hoffman, his assistant Damien Cross, and Damien's girlfriend Judy search through ruins and among the undead for the cause of the plague, while navigating between the military, old-world armed factions, and opportunists profiting from the chaos, and are drawn into a double war between the living and the dead. This volume is the fifth installment of the series, corresponding to the original issue #5. Related materials indicate that in this chapter fractures among the leaders of the undead faction deepen and internal strife is on the verge of erupting, while Damien tries to create a turning point for humanity amid the chaos; whether his efforts can succeed against an endless sea of walking corpses remains uncertain. The work continues Romero's trademark graphic violence and social critique, taking aim at corporate greed, the threat of terror, and human nature itself.
