Catwoman #16

This volume is the Chinese translation of Catwoman #16 (New 52 era, Catwoman Vol. 4), originally published in January 2013. The issue is titled "Black," which may be rendered in Chinese as "Black Encounter." The story takes place inside the secret chamber known as the "Black Room" within the A.R.G.U.S. facility in Washington, D.C.: Selina Kyle is hired to break in and steal the black diamond called the "Heart of Darkness," the very source of the villain Eclipso's power. Upon touching the diamond, she is corrupted by its dark power, her temperament turning violent, while the many magical artifacts in the Black Room are likewise stirred and run amok. The young scientist Darwin, who stays by her side, tries to calm her and warns her not to let the diamond touch the guiding map, but he ultimately cannot stop her. A.R.G.U.S. guards cannot open the gate, so the group seizes a "Ghost Tank" and rams the gate open to escape. Once free, Selina briefly loses consciousness and is put in an ambulance, but she slips away en route and finally hands the diamond to the broker Trip Winter, telling herself she wants no more of this "cursed" work. The diamond ultimately ends up with Alex Montes, disguised as Bruce Gordon, planting the seeds of a larger conspiracy. Throughout the issue, Selina's self-narration runs as a thread, describing her near-joyful addiction to violence once in the grip of the dark power, and her unease afterward at having "lost control"—a key node in Catwoman's character arc at this stage.
