The Wolf Troops Strike
Tags
Summary
The novel consists of 15 parts. The story begins in the seventh year of the Hongzhi reign of the Ming dynasty (1494), when Zhang Shilu, an ambitious general of the Qian army, secretly instigated a rebellion in the Duyun Guard of Guizhou. The imperial court conscripted the seventeen-year-old twenty-second-generation native chieftain of Donglan Prefecture in Guangxi, Wei Zhengbao, the first-generation commander of the wolf soldiers, to lead troops north on campaign. In their first battle at Eagle Mountain, the wolf soldiers subdued Wu Laoqi; they then took Tiger Mountain, where Wei Zhengbao speared Zhang Dadu.
In a night raid on Maweng Cave, Wei Zhengbao leaped into the river and captured Zhang Shilu. Wei Zhengbao was enfeoffed as "Bo of Pingbei." Later, in the forty-fourth year of the Jiajing reign (1565), Yu Dayou, the Guangdong regional commander, requested the Donglan wolf soldiers be sent to Guangdong to resist Japanese pirates. Huang Rusu, Long Jiawen, and Ya Zhikun led the wolf soldiers into Guangdong.
The eighty-seven-year-old Wei Zhengbao accompanied the army to the front and witnessed the great victory at Nan'ao Island. The great victory at Nan'ao Island marked the basic end of the Japanese pirate scourge that had seen large-scale incursions along China's coast.
The novel vividly portrays the passionate spirit of four consecutive generations of Donglan wolf soldiers marching out to defend national unity and national dignity, and shows how Chinese sons and daughters, represented by the Donglan wolf soldiers of Guangxi, demonstrated a precious devotion to home and country with their lives and blood.

Reading tips
- First read the table of contents to grasp the time span of the fifteen parts, then enter the main text, so you are not put off by the dense opening of names and places.
- While reading, jot down changes in Wei Zhengbao's age and titles; this makes the depth of four generations of wolf soldiers marching out clearer.
- Readers unfamiliar with the background of the Japanese pirate scourge in the mid-to-late Ming can learn about the situation along the southeast coast during the Jiajing reign before reading the latter half.
- Read the rebellion-quelling and pirate-resisting sections in comparison, and note how the author uses the fate of the same wolf soldier force to link different wars.
