Summary

To preserve his sense of self, Ye Xun (code name Y) became a hacker. Teaming up with a fence known as the "Black Fortune God," he heads to "Goat City" to make a killing. In 2006, Ye Xun takes first place in Hong Kong's "Capture the Flag" competition and formally apprentices under Old Xia (code name X), a man who is both hacker and detective. From then on he operates in the gray zone as a hacker-detective. During a missing-persons investigation, Ye Xun stumbles upon a dangerous conspiracy involving network passwords, human trafficking, financial trail tracing, and a mysterious organization in the Middle East... To get to the bottom of it, he immediately sets off for the Middle East.

He soon finds himself trapped in a dead end. In his darkest moment, Supa (code name Batu) appears—a top hacker who once faced Ye Xun in the "Capture the Flag" competition. To repay Ye Xun, whose victory had indirectly freed him from a life-or-death predicament, Supa cleverly saves him. From then on, the two kindred spirits become lifelong friends and partners. Ye Xun also finds his life's calling: to fight for justice in cybersecurity!

Editor's review

This is a genre novel that approaches suspense and crime from a hacker's perspective. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, weaving real-world issues such as cybersecurity, human trafficking, and financial trail tracing into protagonist Ye Xun's adventures. The work's standout strength is its construction of a hacker-detective world that operates in the gray zone; the protagonist's arc from "preserving himself" to "fighting for cybersecurity justice" is clear and palpable, while the mentorship lineage and cross-border partnership add depth to the character relationships. Scene shifts between Hong Kong's "Capture the Flag" competition and the perilous Middle East keep the tension alive across geographical spans. For readers who enjoy a blend of technical detail and criminal investigation, this book offers ample immersion; at the same time, author Baiduren Shang'an intersperses plain reflections on cyber ethics, giving the entertainment an extra layer of discussion. Suitable for concentrated reading on a commute or over a weekend, following the protagonist step by step as the conspiracy unfolds.

FAQ

I've never read a hacker-themed novel. Can I start with this one?
Yes. The book begins with protagonist Ye Xun's motivation for becoming a hacker, then gradually unfolds the Capture the Flag competition, his apprenticeship, and transnational cases, making it friendly to new readers. Technical terms mostly serve the plot and don't hinder understanding the main storyline—just follow the characters' actions to get into the story.
Is this the first book in a series, and does it end on a cliffhanger?
Judging by the title "Gray Hat Detective 1," it is the opening volume of a series. The story concludes after Ye Xun and Supa become partners and commit to fighting for cybersecurity justice; the main case reaches a stage of resolution while leaving room for future installments, so it can be read safely as an entry volume.
Do the hacker scenes involve real, actionable techniques?
This is a genre novel; the technical descriptions mainly serve the suspense atmosphere and character development, not as an operation guide. Readers can focus on the plot logic of password clues and financial tracing, and should not treat the content as a reference for real hacking techniques.
