Summary

A scholar who moved from literary studies into cultural studies, Zhao Yuan has written many essays that reflect her thinking and writing state in particular periods. Recently she took stock of her past work and personally selected representative pieces from every stage of her literary creation, writing with concise prose, restrained emotion, and lucid views. In five sections—native land, remembered trifles, travels, mourning, and later years—the book fully displays the course of her literary creation. It includes many of Zhao Yuan's well-known essays from various periods, such as the "Native Land" series, the "Night Talks" series, "The Old Courtyard," "Lamplight," "Notes from a Country Stay," and "Far, Far Away."

Editor's review

Lamplight is an essay collection by the scholar Zhao Yuan, gathering prose from different periods of her life. Through personal writing, the author folds the broad historical and cultural reflections of her academic research into close observation of everyday scenes, objects, people, and events; between the lines one sees both a scholar's depth and composure and a literary writer's delicacy and warmth. The book's value lies not only in its fine prose but in the distinctive perspective it offers: how to use professional knowledge as a foundation for perceiving and interpreting the seemingly ordinary world around us, and so discover unusual intellectual light in ordinary life. For readers weary of fast-food reading who long for calm and deep thought in what they read, this book records not only fragments of life but a possible form of intellectual life.
