Summary

Shunsuke's family comes to the lakeside for a cram school for entrance exams. Three other families are there as well. The sudden visit and murder of a female colleague of Shunsuke's shatters the original calm. His wife admits she is the murderer, and the other families not only oppose calling the police but do their utmost to help her conceal the crime.

Not understanding why, Shunsuke, persuaded by everyone, also joins in disposing of the body. Once he calms down, he begins to probe the mysteries behind these events.

Editor's review

Keigo Higashino turns a lakeside villa used for entrance-exam cram school into a closed stage: four families gather because of their children's exams, Shunsuke's female colleague suddenly visits and is murdered, his wife confesses to being the killer, and the other families not only refrain from calling the police but join forces to help her cover it up, with Shunsuke also persuaded to take part in disposing of the body. The tension lies not in finding out who the murderer is but in how ordinary people, caught up in family interests and human obligations, cross the line step by step. Once Shunsuke calms down and begins to probe the mysteries, readers are also pushed to ask: for the sake of a child's future and the family's face, how far can people compromise? Suited to readers who like social-school mystery and care about family and educational pressure, the plot moves tightly and can be read in one or two concentrated evenings.

Who it's for

  • People who only want light, healing stories and don't want to face human darkness

Reading tips

  1. First sort out the relationships among the four families and each child's situation, then enter the case.
  2. When reading how everyone persuades Shunsuke to conceal the crime, note each person's reasons for shielding and their interests.
  3. Don't just chase who the murderer is; pay more attention to the psychological changes as ordinary people cross the line.
  4. After reading, discuss with others: for the family's face, which compromises are acceptable.

FAQ

Is the core trick of this book the murderer's identity?
Not entirely. The wife soon confesses to being the murderer; the story shifts to why the other families collectively help conceal it, and to Shunsuke's psychological and behavioral changes after he is persuaded to join in disposing of the body—closer to a social-school approach.
Can I read it directly without having read other Keigo Higashino works?
Yes. This is a standalone story that does not depend on earlier books in a series. As long as you accept the setting of entrance-exam pressure, family interests, and multi-player games, you can enter the plot smoothly.
Is it suitable for children to read?
Caution is needed. The book involves murder, disposal of a body, and adults covering up a crime; its themes are rather dark, better suited to adult readers with some judgment. If giving it to teenagers, parents are advised to read it first.

沈杨 Author

Shen Yang is an author about whom limited public information is available; details such as nationality, dates of birth and death, educational background, and writing career are not clearly recorded. One work by this author is held in the collection: the mystery and detective novel Lakeside. Judging from this representative work, Shen Yang writes in the mystery and detective genre, setting the story by a lake and using the watery landscape to create an elusive atmosphere that drives the unfolding of the puzzle and the revelation of the truth. Because only one work has been seen so far, it is difficult to sketch the full arc of the author's writing or the complete picture of their style, and it is also impossible to judge their sustained commitment to and overall achievement in this genre. Readers who wish to learn about this author may begin with Lakeside and observe how the suspense is constructed and the narrative paced, while watching for possible future works.
