Summary

Xia Feng, an extreme sports enthusiast, is chosen to enter a game system and embarks on a journey through different times and spaces.

On an ancient, mysterious continent, Xia Feng sets out to find the Genesis Book, a secret tome that can save the land;

A mysterious man called Baichi is trained as a gladiator and, in brutal slave combat, is unexpectedly swept into the historical struggle for supremacy among the Southern Song, Western Xia, and Jin dynasties;

Pete, having recovered his memory, enters the game to seek the truth but stumbles into Genghis Khan's iron-and-horse conquests...

Having passed through many worlds, is he Xia Feng, Baichi, or Pete? Between the virtual and the real, which is truly the illusion?

Editor's review

The seven-volume Game Era weaves extreme sports, time travel, and historical upheaval into one throughline: three identities—Xia Feng, Baichi, and Pete—entangle with one another as the protagonist searches for the Genesis Book on a fictional continent and then is tossed through the rivalries of the Southern Song, Western Xia, and Jin, and Genghis Khan's rise to power. Its appeal lies not in the thrill of any single level but in the question "Who am I?" and the wavering boundary between virtual and real. The multi-world structure readily generates suspense and suits serial reading: each volume advances one layer of the puzzle, and looking back after finishing reveals earlier foreshadowing. For readers who like game settings, historical time travel, and identity suspense, the series offers a continuous immersive experience; read it as a long-form run of levels, watching the protagonist's memory recovery and shifting choices rather than rushing to decide which world is real.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Readers who like game-system and level-hopping settings
  • Time-travel readers interested in the Southern Song, Western Xia, Jin, and Yuan historical background
  • Young adult and adult readers willing to follow a multi-volume serial
  • Suspense fans who enjoy identity puzzles and the virtual-versus-real question

Not a good fit for

  • Readers who want only single-volume, self-contained stories and prefer not to follow a long series
  • Readers sensitive to the blending of historical figures with fictional plots
  • Readers expecting strict hard-science-fiction settings and logical deduction

Reading tips

  1. Read in volume order and note changes in the protagonist's identity and memory state at the start of each volume.
  2. Keep a character-identity chart recording the switch points among Xia Feng, Baichi, and Pete.
  3. Pause at historical background passages to distinguish real history from game settings.
  4. After finishing the last volume, flip back to volume one to check early foreshadowing and identity clues.

FAQ

Do the books need to be read in order?
Reading in volume order is recommended. The story begins with Xia Feng entering the game system and then shifts among different times, spaces, and identities; volumes are linked by memory recovery, advancing clues, and changing relationships. Skipping around can confuse the protagonist's current identity and world, while sequential reading better reveals the pleasure of the puzzle unfolding layer by layer.
Can I understand it if I've never played games?
Yes. The game system mainly serves as a structure driving travel and missions and does not depend on player experience. Readers need only accept the basic premise of "enter the system, complete the goal, switch worlds" to follow the plot. What really requires attention is the protagonist's changing identity and memory, not the game terminology.
Is the historical part real history?
The work places historical backgrounds such as the Southern Song, Western Xia, Jin, and Genghis Khan alongside a fictional continent and a game system; it is fictional narrative. Historical figures and events are story material, not a retelling of historical fact. Treat historical passages as the stage for the plot, and if the history interests you, consult history books separately.

About the author

方白羽 Author

Fang Baiyu is a Chinese-language author about whom limited public information is available. Three of his works can currently be confirmed, among which the Game Era series and Qianmen: The Legend of Yun Xiang are the better known. Game Era, published in seven volumes, is often classified as otherworld-continent fiction, while Qianmen: The Legend of Yun Xiang, in six volumes, is a martial-arts novel and served as the source material for the television adaptation starring Chen Xiao and Mao Xiaotong. Judging from these works, his writing draws on otherworldly adventure and martial-arts sects, combining fantastical settings with wuxia storytelling, and is marked by large-scale, multi-volume serialization. As details of his life, nationality, and dates remain unrecorded, a fuller picture of his work and literary influence awaits further material.
