Reading tips
- Set aside a relatively uninterrupted stretch of time to read immersively, following the rhythm of the prose through the slow flow of the era and the sudden turns of fate.
- Pay attention to the multiple meanings of the 'sea' as an image—how it evolves from a backdrop for survival into a spiritual symbol.
- After finishing, consider what 'shore' can be held fast to amid the 'tides' of the times that individuals and families face.

About the author
Qiao Hongming is an author about whom relatively little public information is available; only one work by this name can currently be identified, the social novel The Tide. Since basic details such as dates of birth and death, nationality, and educational background are not clearly recorded, his personal history is difficult to describe in detail. The existing work nonetheless offers some indication of his thematic interests. The Tide is classified as a social novel, suggesting that the author tends to present social realities and the fortunes of individual characters through fiction, using narrative to reflect the conflicts and changes of a particular era. On the basis of the information available, Qiao Hongming has produced only a small number of works and has not yet formed a widely documented body of writing, so readers' knowledge of him and his work remains limited. Even so, The Tide, as his representative work, provides the main point of entry for understanding this author, and its choice of subject matter and narrative concerns are worth further consideration in the course of reading.
