Bolu Medical Cases

Bolu Medical Cases is a collection of clinical case records by Wang Fengchun, one of the four great physicians of Beijing. "Bolu" was the name of Wang's study, hence the book's title. Wang was widely read and deeply studied the classics, including the Inner Canon, the Classic of Difficult Issues, the Treatise on Cold Damage and the Essentials of the Golden Cabinet; he practised medicine in Beijing for over forty years, excelled at treating seasonal warm diseases, and was meticulous in pattern differentiation, with a distinctive flair in prescribing. This book gathers over a hundred of Wang's typical clinical cases, arranged under three broad categories: internal medicine, gynaecology and paediatrics. The internal medicine section covers summerheat-dampness, damp-warmth, warm diseases, diarrhoea, dysentery, malaria, cough and asthma with phlegm-fluid retention, haematemesis, consumptive disease, liver-yang headache, wind-stroke-like conditions, impediment patterns, stomach disorders, dysphagia, wasting-thirst, jaundice, swelling, abdominal pain, beriberi, bloody urine, bloody stool, strangury with turbidity, nocturnal emission, lung abscess and intestinal abscess; the gynaecology section covers menstrual regulation, pregnancy, postpartum care and flooding with leukorrhoea; the paediatrics section covers smallpox and chickenpox, measles, mumps-like swelling of the throat, mumps, worm accumulation, malnutrition accumulation and chronic spleen deficiency. Each case records in detail the patient's circumstances, symptoms, tongue and pulse, the treatment principles and prescription, and changes at follow-up, fairly completely presenting Wang's consistent approach to pattern differentiation and treatment and his prescribing characteristics. It is important material for studying the modern Beijing warm-disease school of Chinese medicine and its clinical prescribing style.
