Editor's review

Jian Bozan was one of the important founders of Marxist historiography in China. This book, Studying History, collects his writings on historiographical theory and is divided into two parts, The Transformation of Traditional Scholarship and New Reviews of Old Books, covering specific topics such as a brief discussion of historical sources, historical periodization, periodization in literary history, and the five ranks of nobility. Its value lies not in offering a ready-made set of historical conclusions, but in showing how a historian confronts traditional learning, handles historical sources, and discusses periodization and concepts. For readers of history today, many of the problematics in the book still carry methodological significance: how to view traditional scholarship, how to use historical sources, and how to divide history into periods. The writing bears the argumentative flavor of academic writing in the first half of the twentieth century, and some pieces involve concepts from traditional learning that require a certain patience. It is suitable as a "method course" for beginning the study of history, and also for thinking in dialogue with modern historiographical discussions.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Students majoring in history and readers new to historical research
  • Enthusiasts interested in source methods and historiographical theory
  • Readers who want to understand the early shape of Chinese Marxist historiography
  • Readers who need to think about historical periodization and the transformation of scholarship

Not a good fit for

  • General readers who only want popular historical stories
  • People with no historical background who are unwilling to engage with theoretical discussion
  • Readers expecting a systematic general history

Reading tips

  1. Read the section on historical sources first to grasp the author's basic approach to handling sources, then move on to the other topics.
  2. Read the two pieces on historical periodization and periodization in literary history side by side to appreciate how periodization methods are applied in different fields.
  3. When reading New Reviews of Old Books, jot down the author's judgments on traditional learning and compare them with modern research.
  4. There is no need to finish it in one sitting; reading by topic in several sessions and taking brief notes is more effective.

FAQ

Is this book a general history or a collection on historiographical method?
According to the materials, it mainly collects Jian Bozan's writings on historiographical theory, divided into The Transformation of Traditional Scholarship and New Reviews of Old Books, discussing topics such as historical sources, historical periodization, periodization in literary history, and the five ranks of nobility. It is a work of historiographical method and academic commentary, not a systematic general history.
Can someone without a history background understand it?
Yes, but there is a certain threshold. The book involves source methods and concepts from traditional learning; beginners can first grasp the two main lines of historical sources and historical periodization, and need not insist on fully understanding specific traditional textual research. Reading it alongside an introduction to historiography will make it smoother.
Are the views in the book still applicable today?
The specific conclusions bear the mark of their time and should not be simply adopted wholesale, but the problematics of discussing historical sources, periodization, and the transformation of traditional scholarship still have reference value. It is best read as a text for understanding discussions of Chinese historiographical method in the twentieth century, with a critical eye.
