Summary

The book before you was written by sixteen students of varying ages, from eleven to nineteen, who recorded their five days of fieldwork and interviews in the ancient water town of Lili and in Kaixiangong Village in Suzhou. During this five-day anthropology field project in Suzhou, the students stepped beyond the classroom into the wider world, engaging with individual lives, social life, and nature in Suzhou, sensing entirely different forces of life and forming close ties between themselves and nature and society.

Lili, a well-preserved example of a typical Jiangnan water town, lies 30 kilometers southeast of the seat of Wujiang County. The town is laid out as one river with two streets, and most of the surviving buildings along both banks are two-story Ming and Qing structures, their shopfronts and store halls joined one after another. Another distinctive feature of the ancient town is its long embankment, built entirely of local stone. After several hundred years it remains as neat and solid as ever. Set into the embankment are more than 300 stone railings, among them finely carved elephant-trunk posts as delightful in their small compass as seals under a seal carver’s hand—at once excellent mooring facilities and precious works of art.

Editor's review

River Journey is a modern narrative work by the emerging writer Sixteen Articles, noted in recent Chinese-language literary circles for its distinctive literary perspective and delicate emotional portrayal. Through the protagonist's journey downriver, the book links a series of seemingly independent yet interwoven fragments of life, exploring eternal themes such as memory, identity, and the passage of time. The author's style is restrained and poetic, with profound emotional tension surging beneath a calm narrative surface; the descriptions of natural scenery are especially outstanding, and the river is not merely a geographical backdrop but a symbol carrying the characters' fates and inner turbulence. In literary terms, the book's experimental structure—cleverly combining a linear journey with fragmented memories—shows the author's exploration of narrative form, though it may challenge readers accustomed to traditional, strongly plotted fiction. Its core reading value lies in offering an immersive introspective experience, guiding readers to savor details at a slow pace and reflect on themselves, their past, and their connection to place. It is more like an ink-wash scroll painted in words, valuing mood over story and insight over answers.
