The story then unfolds around the true political structure of the Eastern Jin: the "Wang and the Ma share the realm" arrangement of the Langya Wang clan, the mutual suspicion between émigré and native Jiangnan elite families, and refugee commanders who can quell rebellions as readily as foment them. Drawing on a time traveler's foresight, Shen Zhezi picks the right side during Wang Dun's rebellion, rises step by step through court rivalries, takes command of troops, quells Su Jun's rebellion, holds the Jiang-Huai region against the Southern invasion of the Later Zhao, and bides his time for a northern expedition. Centered on aristocratic clan politics, the novel depicts the gathering and scattering of clans, north-south distrust, and the contest between great families and imperial power; it also addresses practical matters such as the land census, currency systems, granaries, and recruitment, seeking to answer the question "how did the Han patrimony endure?" The prose follows the terse, clean style of A New Account of Tales of the World and Zizhi Tongjian, written in a semi-classical, semi-vernacular register. The book emphasizes maneuver and intrigue, with military climaxes concentrated in the later northern expeditions and the management of the four frontiers.
