Summary

Fan Shengzhi (dates unknown) lived around the 1st century BCE, toward the end of the Western Han. A native of Fenshui (north of present-day Cao County, Shandong), he was a renowned ancient agronomist. *Fan Shengzhi shu* is an important agricultural work of the late Western Han and the earliest surviving monograph on agronomy in China.

Editor's review

*Fan Shengzhi shu* is the earliest surviving monograph on agronomy in China, compiled by Fan Shengzhi (c. 1st century BCE) at the end of the Western Han from agricultural experience in the Guanzhong region. The original text has been lost; the present edition is a reconstructed compilation. Its contents cover tillage, seed selection, sowing, fertilization, irrigation, and the pit-field method (quzhong fa), the last being especially notable and embodying a technical orientation toward intensive cultivation. This Jinzhang Shuju edition makes this early agricultural work accessible to general readers. Its value lies not in literary style but in agricultural logic: how to organize production according to season, soil, and crop. It can be read alongside *Qimin yaoshu* to observe the accumulation and change of agronomic knowledge, or as an entry point for understanding Han agricultural society and the traditional emphasis on soil fertility and solar terms.

  2. Focus on technical entries such as the pit-field method, and understand its intensive-farming approach in the context of Han agriculture.
  3. Read alongside relevant chapters of *Qimin yaoshu* to compare shifts in agronomic concerns across periods.

About the publisher

Jinzhang Book Company (Jinzhang Shuju) China · Founded in 1901

Jinzhang Book Company (Jinzhang Shuju) was a private publishing and distribution house in Shanghai during the late Qing and early Republican periods, issuing traditional works by lithographic printing. Judging from the 1,194 titles in the collection, its publishing focused on classical poetry, Eastern philosophy, historical reading, traditional Chinese medical texts, and canonical works, along with books on literary appreciation. Representative titles include the poetry and prose collections of Du Fu and Ouyang Xiu; historical works such as the Book of Han and Zizhi Tongjian; classical texts such as the Book of Documents and Mencius; and specialized and literary classics such as Treatise on Cold Damage and Li Sao. Its author resources cover major figures across the ages, including Du Fu, Ban Gu, Sima Guang, Zhang Zhongjing, Qu Yuan, Ouyang Xiu, and Tang Shenwei, reflecting the house's characteristic reliance on traditional scholarship and medical literature while serving general readers. Public information on its early history and operational details is limited, so no conjecture is offered here.

FAQ

Does the original text of *Fan Shengzhi shu* still exist?
The original was lost in transmission; what survives today consists largely of reconstructions compiled by later scholars from *Qimin yaoshu* and other sources, not a complete original. Readers should note the source and editorial method of the edition and should not equate the present text with the full Western Han original.
What farming techniques does the book mainly discuss?
It covers tillage, seed selection, sowing, fertilization, irrigation, and field management, among which the pit-field method is representative: it emphasizes concentrating water and fertilizer on small plots and practicing intensive cultivation to raise yields, reflecting agricultural experience in the Guanzhong region in the late Western Han.
What is the significance of reading it for general readers?
It offers a basic picture of China's earliest surviving agronomic monograph and an understanding of traditional agriculture's emphasis on soil fertility, solar terms, and meticulous management. It can also serve as supplementary material for understanding production and livelihood in Han society; it need not be judged by the standards of a practical planting manual.

About the author

氾胜之 Author

Fan Shengzhi was an agriculturalist in ancient China whose exact life dates and personal details are unknown, as public information is limited. He is known today mainly through his representative work, The Book of Fan Shengzhi. One of the earliest extant Chinese agricultural treatises and an important record of Han-dynasty farming techniques, the original text is believed to have been lost after the Song dynasty, and what survives has largely been reconstructed through later compilations. The preserved chapters deal with agriculture in the Guanzhong region, covering cultivation, seed selection, fertilization, irrigation, drought prevention, and crop growing. The language is concise and practical, with attention to operational detail and a clear emphasis on summed-up experience. Its accounts of techniques such as quzhong and souzhong reflect the tradition of intensive farming and influenced later agricultural writings and dryland farming in northern China. Within agriculture and forestry literature, The Book of Fan Shengzhi is pioneering, and Fan Shengzhi is accordingly regarded as an important figure in Han-dynasty agronomy.
