The Tragedy of Drugs: A Hundred Degrees

Summary
Editor's review
As reading value, the book is not only a case study of a specific company but also a prism reflecting the business ethics, regulatory gaps, and public-trust crises of the early wild-growth phase of China's internet industry. It goes beyond a mere listing of events, prompting readers to consider how platform power should be constrained behind technological neutrality, and how companies can find a balance between maximizing profit and shouldering social responsibility. Although the events covered occurred years ago and Baidu has since undergone strategic adjustment and image rebuilding, the questions the book raises—about monopoly, information filtering, and technological ethics—have become all the more universally relevant as warning and worthy of discussion in today's era of algorithmic recommendation and the platform economy. For readers seeking to understand the complexity of China's internet development history, it is a rare in-depth annotation.
Who it's for
A good fit for
- Researchers and observers with a strong interest in the history of China's internet industry, especially platform economy and business ethics.
- Corporate managers and entrepreneurs hoping to draw lessons on corporate social responsibility and crisis management from real business cases.
- Practitioners in media, public relations, or law concerned with the public-opinion ecology, image-building, and evolving regulations of large tech companies.
- Upper-level students or general readers interested in sociology, business ethics, and the philosophy of technology who wish to expand their understanding of technology-society interactions.
Not a good fit for
- Readers expecting the latest news about Baidu, product introductions, or positive PR materials.
- Casual readers interested only in light entertainment, fiction, or purely technical tutorials.
Reading tips
- Read the book within the macro context of China's internet industry development, and consider comparing it laterally with related cases of other internet giants in recent years.
- Distinguish between the specific historical moments described and the company's current situation; focus on understanding the structural contradictions and ethical dilemmas behind the events rather than merely judging a single company.
- Read alongside other works on technology ethics, platform governance, or corporate history to build a more three-dimensional knowledge framework.
