Summary

This book is both an expanded edition of the author's monograph Six Discriminations on Yin Dynasty History and an upgraded version of the two first editions of Yin Dynasty History published in the United States and China in 2023. Its historical account is based on the ancestral genealogy Yin Family Chronicle, passed down for more than 1,700 years from pre-Qin bamboo slips, along with many transmitted texts, oracle bone inscriptions, bronze inscriptions, and other archaeological materials. Compared with the first edition published in the United States and China in 2023, this book better meets, in the following six respects, the six-character requirement—"seek truth, be objective, be fair"—that the renowned oracle bone scholar Dong Zuobin and the Hong Kong-Taiwan historical authority Professor Li Dingyi successively urged upon the author in their lifetimes.

First, with ample historical materials and modern archaeological discoveries, this book demonstrates that the dynasty founded by Cheng Tang after he replaced the Xia was named "Yin," not "Shang."

Second, this book firmly establishes that the Yin dynasty passed down 17 generations and 27 Yin Sons of Heaven who combined the roles of "Shang King" and "Yin Emperor." The total duration of the Yin dynasty was 574 years.

Third, this book firmly establishes that the territory directly or indirectly controlled by the Yin dynasty in its early period was vast, extending to the two great river basins of the Yellow River and the Yangtze; Cheng Tang, the founding great emperor of the Yin dynasty, was the actual founder and originator of a unified Chinese state, not Qin Shi Huang and Han Wu Di as traditionally believed, and certainly not King Wu of Zhou.

Fourth, this book firmly establishes that in the mid-Yin period, pressed by enemies on all sides, the dynasty had to adopt a strategy of contraction—biding its time and concealing its strength—and had to suspend the father-to-son succession system established by the founding great emperor Cheng Tang, replacing it with a "royal nomination system" modeled on the abdication system of the legendary Yao, Shun, and Yu era.

Editor's review

This is a study of Yin dynasty history with a distinctly personal stance, and the second edition strengthens the arguments on six fronts compared with the first. Using the ancestral genealogy Yin Family Chronicle as its core source, together with transmitted texts, oracle bone inscriptions, and bronze inscriptions, the author advances a series of judgments: that the dynasty's name was "Yin" rather than "Shang," that the Yin dynasty lasted 574 years, and that Cheng Tang was the actual founder of a unified state. The book repeatedly invokes Dong Zuobin's and Li Dingyi's injunction to "seek truth, be objective, be fair," showing that the author consciously takes evidentiary rigor as a writing principle. It should be noted that the credibility of genealogies as historical sources is itself a matter of scholarly debate; readers would do well to treat the book as a systematic statement of one view rather than a settled conclusion. It suits readers interested in pre-Qin history and oracle bone studies who have some ability to discriminate, and is best read alongside other general histories.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Readers interested in Yin-Shang history and oracle bone studies who are willing to read lengthy arguments
  • Researchers seeking different views on the "Yin" versus "Shang" naming dispute
  • Enthusiasts of historical method interested in how genealogical materials enter historical argument
  • Advanced readers able to cross-read against multiple general histories

Not a good fit for

  • Beginners hoping for a concise, accessible general history of the Shang dynasty
  • Those lacking a foundation in pre-Qin history and unable to judge source credibility
  • Readers expecting scholarly consensus rather than one school's view

Reading tips

  1. Read the introduction or the note to the second edition first to grasp the six core arguments, then move into the chapters to verify the reasoning.
  2. While reading, keep a standard Shang dynasty history at hand and mark where this book differs from mainstream accounts.
  3. Take separate notes on passages citing genealogical materials, noting how they corroborate oracle bone and bronze inscriptions.

FAQ

Is this book suitable for beginners in Shang dynasty history?
Not really as a first book. The argument is dense and carries a distinct personal viewpoint; beginners lack a benchmark for comparison and may mistake one view for settled fact. It is better to read a standard general history first.
Are the genealogical materials in the book reliable?
The credibility of genealogies as historical sources is debated in scholarly circles. This book uses them alongside transmitted texts, oracle bone inscriptions, and bronze inscriptions; readers should note how the author completes the corroboration while retaining independent judgment.
Is the second edition very different from the first?
According to the book's own account, the second edition argues more fully on six fronts—the dynasty's name, the line of rulers and duration, territory, and royal succession—and is an expansion and upgrade of the first. Reading the second edition directly is sufficient.

About the author

殷作斌 Author

Yin Zuobin is an author about whom little public information is available. His one known work is A History of the Yin Dynasty (2nd Edition), which is classified as a history title. Judging from the book's title and category, his writing focuses on the history of the Shang (Yin) dynasty, making it a specialized study of a single historical period aimed at general readers and history enthusiasts interested in early Chinese history. Since only one work is held and no reliable information is available about the author's life, education, career, or research focus, nothing further can be said about his academic background or writing experience. On the basis of the available evidence, he may be regarded as a writer who systematically organizes and accessibly presents the history of the Yin dynasty, while the value and distinctive features of his work are best judged by readers in light of the book itself.

殷昌盛 Author

Yin Changsheng is an author about whom limited public information is currently available; details such as his place of origin, dates of birth and death, and professional career have not been clearly recorded. As far as the library's holdings show, he has only one work, the history book History of the Yin Dynasty (2nd Edition). Judging from the title and its classification, the book takes the history of the Yin dynasty as its subject and belongs to the category of history writing intended for general readers; the existence of a second edition indicates that the first edition was later revised or reprinted. Because other information about the author is scarce, his writing style and scholarly orientation are difficult to assess fully, and readers may learn about his narrative approach and use of historical sources through the book itself. Overall, Yin Changsheng is currently known to the public through this single historical work, and his profile as an author awaits further material.
