Summary

A work of science history whose ambition is summed up by its subtitle—how one plague reshaped today's city and world—and whose main text reads better than a novel. The author, Steven Johnson, is a New York Times bestselling writer who has long examined science, technology, and cities within a single frame, and this book continues his signature approach: entering through an unremarkable detail and finally prying open the understanding of an entire era. The book's true protagonists are four: the deadly cholera vibrio, Victorian London, the anesthetist John Snow, and the assistant curate Henry Whitehead. Snow supplies reason and data; Whitehead supplies community trust and clues. Two men of very different temperaments, ignored by authority, completed a cross-disciplinary collaboration. The narrative unfolds like a detective novel: cases appear one by one, clues are eliminated one by one, the miasma theory is repeatedly contradicted by reality, until the neighborhood map covered in black dots is spread before the officials. More remarkably, it does not stop at "heroes solve the case" but pushes the lens forward to the decades of sewer construction and public health institutions that followed, making you realize that the clean water from the tap was bought with countless lives. The translator Jin Tingting's rendering is fluent and restrained, so that one hardly feels a layer of language in between.

Editor's review

FAQ
