Summary

The story is set on an island nation in South Asia. Young Roger is about to marry his fiancée Malan when his father is beaten to death by the local chieftain, who also seizes the land his father spent half a lifetime buying. Hot-blooded Roger appeals at every level, but to no avail. He takes leave of Malan and embarks on a perilous, arduous road of no return to avenge his father. The plot is tightly linked and breathtaking, highly readable.

Editor's review

The Gallows of Justice is a suspense novel of considerable controversy and speculative depth. With a cold, sharp pen, the author Azuma Morio constructs a complex narrative field around crime and punishment, justice, and human redemption. What is most commendable here is not the plot twists typical of traditional suspense fiction, but the book's deep deconstruction of the concept of "justice" in modern society—when legal procedure conflicts with moral intuition, how should the individual conduct themselves? Through interwoven multi-threaded narration, the ensemble of characters each represent different views of justice and ethical positions, forcing readers into constant self-questioning as they read. In terms of literary technique, the author excels at using environmental description to heighten psychological atmosphere, and the courtroom debate scenes are especially accomplished, demonstrating solid narrative control. It should be noted, however, that the logical rigor of some plot points could be improved, and certain turns feel slightly contrived. Overall, this is a work that prompts lasting reflection; its value transcends genre fiction, touching on deep issues of legal philosophy and social ethics.
