Summary

Han Han's first collection of essays. The book brings together pieces built on his own distinctive way of thinking, commenting on current affairs, culture, film, art, motor racing and much more. What sort of events give Han Han the boldness to strike straight at the heart? What sort of people catch his attention? What sort of film deserves a word from him? Han Han says: words without weight have no power.

Editor's review

In "Essays of a Random Sort," Han Han is placed within seemingly unrelated frames—current affairs, the humanities, film, art, and racing—and allowed to speak in a tone that takes no detours. Its value lies not in offering standard answers but in modeling a stance toward public topics: doubt first, then judge, and finally state things clearly. The pieces are short and their entry points small, yet they often start from a piece of news, a film, or a race and turn toward more general questions, reading with a sense of speed while leaving room to linger. Han Han's prose carries a pronounced colloquial rhythm and a taste for irony; its sharpness comes not from piled-up adjectives but from the gap between logic and metaphor. It suits dipping into a few pieces in fragmented time—on the commute, before sleep—or using it to practice making a point briefly and with weight before joining a discussion.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Office workers who read in fragmented time and prefer short-form commentary
  • Young readers following current affairs and social topics who want a non-academic voice
  • Writing enthusiasts who want to learn how to make points briefly and forcefully
  • Readers who have read Han Han's fiction and want to see his essayistic side

Not a good fit for

  • Readers expecting systematic argument and rigorous academic analysis
  • Readers uncomfortable with a colloquial, sharp-edged critical style
  • Readers who need continuous long-form narrative and complete plot

Reading tips

  1. No need to read in order—start with pieces on films, racing, or current affairs you already know.
  2. After each piece, restate the author's core judgment in two or three sentences to test your understanding.
  3. When you meet a sharp view, resist agreeing or disagreeing at once; note your reasons and revisit in a few days.
  4. Read alongside similar essays by other authors to compare entry points and verbal restraint.

FAQ

Is this book fiction or nonfiction?
It is a collection of essays on current affairs, the humanities, film, art, racing, and other topics. The pieces are short and independent; you can start with any one, with no need for continuity.
Can I read this without having read other works by Han Han?
Yes. The essays are independent and do not rely on earlier works. Still, the personal voice and stance are strong, so readers might treat it as a sample of a viewpoint rather than accept it as conclusions.
Is it suitable for reading in one sitting?
Not really. Individual pieces carry considerable information density and emotional intensity, and reading straight through can be tiring. Breaking it into sessions of three or four pieces makes it easier to remember and digest.
What does one mainly gain from reading it?
Mostly inspiration in perspective and expression: how to find an entry point in everyday topics and how to state a judgment clearly in concise language—not systematic knowledge of a field.
