Summary

This is the edition Wu Han completed in 1948, when his mind was free, his ideas lively, and his language vivid, and he was in his prime. In his hands, a petty rogue who endured hardship and begged for a living, and a commander who was brave, wise, and magnanimous; a ruler who was diligent and caring for the people and worked day and night, yet also deeply suspicious and murderous—a complex, contradictory emperor comes vividly to life. The book has become an enduring classic of Ming history and imperial biography.

Editor's review

Mr. Wu Han's Biography of Zhu Yuanzhang is a historical biography that combines scholarly depth with narrative tension. As a foundational work of Ming studies, its value goes far beyond recounting the legendary life of a founding emperor. With rigorous historical scholarship as its bone and vivid, fluent writing as its flesh, Mr. Wu Han not only traces Zhu Yuanzhang's dramatic trajectory from impoverished monk to supreme emperor, but also probes deeply into his complex, multifaceted character, his highly controversial methods of governance, and how these personal traits profoundly shaped the political landscape and social ecology of the early Ming. The book's unique appeal lies in transcending simple praise or blame, striving to understand every choice and struggle of Zhu Yuanzhang within its specific historical context, revealing how power alienates human nature and the practical logic behind institutional design. For readers who wish to see through dramatizations and labels and truly understand how the Ming dynasty became what it was, this is an indispensable classic. Its reflections on power, human nature, and the laws of history still resonate strongly today.
