Summary

Late Ming is an alternate-history military novel by Ke Shanmeng, serialized on Qidian from 2012 to March 2014. Running roughly 2.27 million characters across more than six hundred chapters, it is regarded as one of the representative works of the "time travel to the Ming" genre. The story is set during the Chongzhen reign at the fall of the Ming dynasty: in the north, the Later Jin cavalry raids repeatedly, and war rages unabated in Liaodong; in the south, Jiangnan remains a land of small bridges, flowing streams, and peaceful song and dance, while the court is riven by factional strife, state finances collapse, and famine and displaced refugees spread across the land. The novel employs a double time-travel structure: Chen Xin, a worldly and smooth-tongued office director skilled at managing people and affairs, and Liu Minyou, a kindhearted technical recluse who knows only how to write code, both fall into the lower strata of late Ming society. Starting from the humblest circumstances, one navigates between officialdom and maritime merchants through cunning, business acumen, and personal connections, while the other applies pragmatic technical and institutional thinking to civil administration and military training, accumulating capital through maritime trade and drilling the Wendeng Battalion, gradually establishing their own foothold amid the chaos. The novel emphasizes historical research and wartime detail, carefully laying out formations, firearms, logistics, and officialdom amid the transition from cold weapons to hot; through the fates of numerous ordinary people—soldiers, boat trackers, peddlers, peasant women, bondservants—it sketches a vast panorama of the era. With "saving the falling sky" as its throughline, the book presents the clash and compromise between idealism and realpolitik, ultimately arriving at a historical trajectory wholly different from the real one.

Editor's review

Reading tips
