About the author
Henry Beston (1888–1968) was an American writer of nature literature. He is best known for The Outermost House, a book that records his year of living alone on a Cape Cod beach and his observations there, and that is regarded as a classic of American nature writing. Beston's writing focuses on the subtle changes in the natural world and the turning of the seasons, presenting in calm and meticulous prose his feelings and reflections on human beings living alongside nature, and forming a style that combines keen observation with literary quality. Besides nature writing, he also wrote fairy tales; one of his works, Starlight Fairy Tales, is included in this collection, showing that his writing was not limited to a single genre. Public information about him is limited, but on the evidence of the works available, his nature writing has had some influence on the tradition of American nature literature and is often mentioned alongside writers concerned with life in the wild and with ecological experience.
