Summary

Shi's Prescription Studies is a formulary work of traditional Chinese medicine compiled by the modern physician Shi Yiren (1896–1966), one volume of the Shi's Medical Book Series. The book consists of an introduction and a classified section. The introduction briefly traces the development of prescriptions, their organizing principles and methods of classification, discusses incompatibilities in Chinese herbal compounding, and examines the differences between ancient formulas and modern dosages, reminding students to note the conversion between ancient weights and measures and present-day amounts. The classified section groups formulas by therapeutic method across sixteen chapters, containing 256 prescriptions—diaphoretics, emetics, laxatives, harmonizing formulas, cooling formulas, and so on—each category further divided by specific method; diaphoretics, for example, fall into ten methods: warming with pungency, cooling with pungency, assisting yang, nourishing yin, regulating qi, stanching blood, transforming fluids, dispelling dampness, clearing summerheat, and resolving toxicity. Each prescription lists composition, usage, indications, explanation of meaning, and modifications, with a formulary verse before some entries to aid memorization. The author advocated organizing traditional formulas with a scientific eye and re-examining ancient prescriptions, introducing contemporary Western physiological and pharmacological knowledge into his discussions to explain how formulas act—an expression of the era's convergence of Chinese and Western medicine. First used in teaching as Lectures on Chinese Prescription Studies and later expanded into a book, it is an important reference for the study of modern Chinese formulary education and prescribing thought. This entry is based on the 1958 new edition from Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • 中医、中西医结合专业的在校学生,用于方剂分类与配伍法度的系统复习
  • 基层临床中医师,希望借近代名医的分类框架梳理自己的处方思路
  • 对近代中医教育史、中西医汇通史感兴趣的医史研究者与藏书爱好者
  • 习惯背诵方歌、喜欢以“法统方”方式学习方剂的自学者

Not a good fit for

  • 完全没有中医基础、期望直接照方抓药自疗的普通读者
  • 只想查询现代临床指南与循证用药方案的西医临床人员
  • 需要现代剂量规范与药典标准、追求现行法规合规性的处方使用者

Reading tips

  1. 先读绪论中的处方组织与古今用量考辨,再进入分论,可避免用今量套古方。
  2. 按“治法—方剂—方歌”三层顺序记诵,每类先掌握主方,再看加减分化。
  3. 遇到犀角、朱砂等已受限药物,只作学术源流了解,临床一律以现行药典与法规为准。
  4. 可与《中国处方学讲义》及现行《方剂学》教材对读,比较八法分类与十六类分类的异同。
