Summary

Rami Elhanan, an Israeli, is a renowned graphic designer. Bassam Aramin, a Palestinian, spent seven years in prison for taking part in resistance activities and, after his release, helped found the organization Combatants for Peace, dedicated to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through peaceful means. From ethnicity to religion to territory to the color of their license plates, their lives had begun at opposing poles: until 1997, when Rami's fourteen-year-old daughter Smadar was killed in a suicide bombing; ten years later, Bassam's ten-year-old daughter Abir was shot in the back of the head by a rubber bullet fired by Israeli border police outside her school.

The two fathers, each having lost a daughter, decide to use their grief as a weapon—not for revenge, but for reconciliation. They tell their story again and again to the world, challenging the unjust status quo upheld by violence and lies, and calling for an end to the hatred and trauma passed down through generations. Above all, they keep Smadar and Abir alive through memory.

Editor's review

Apeirogon is a novel by Irish writer Colum McCann, published in 2020 and winner of the 2021 National Book Award for Fiction. With its vast historical scope and finely wrought emotional detail, the work constructs a spiritual landscape spanning more than half a century and connecting Ireland and the United States. McCann continues the multi-stranded narration and historical intertextuality of Let the Great World Spin, but his touch is more restrained and inward, weaving family secrets, historical trauma, and individual redemption into a dense web. Through the intertwined fates of two protagonists—an Irish nun and a New York doctor—the novel explores the boundaries of faith, forgiveness, and memory. McCann's prose has a poetic penetration; he excels at injecting glimmers of humanity into the cracks of history, allowing readers to sense the possibility of light redemption within heavy themes. The work is not only another peak in McCann's career but also an important text in contemporary English literature on trauma writing and historical memory.

Is the historical background of the novel based on real events?
Set against the social changes in twentieth-century Ireland, the novel blends authentic historical atmosphere with the fates of fictional characters, showcasing McCann's narrative hallmark of placing personal stories within a grand historical framework.
Why is the title translated as Wuji Xing?
The translated title 'Wuji Xing' (Formless) deftly echoes the novel's theme—those emotions and memories that cannot be simply defined and have no fixed form, just as historical trauma manifests in complex ways within individual lives.

About the author

Colum McCann is a novelist who has drawn considerable attention in contemporary English-language literature. Nine of his works are included in this collection, among them Let the Great World Spin, Fishing the Black River, Apeirogon, Dancer, Everything in This Country Must, Zoli, This Side of Brightness and Songdogs. Because public information is limited, his nationality, dates of birth and death, and original English name remain to be verified. These works suggest that McCann excels at multi-stranded narrative structures that encompass broad social panoramas, moving between New York, Paris and Ireland and focusing on immigrants, loss, and how ordinary people preserve their dignity amid upheaval. His prose is both lyrical and clear-eyed about reality, and his work is often classified as foreign literature and classic writing, attracting sustained attention from readers and critics.
