Nova Vol. 2

Summary
This volume collects the second installment of Marvel's 2013 NOVA series, corresponding to Nova (2013) #2, "Chapter Two: Believe," written by Jeph Loeb with art by Ed McGuinness, part of the Marvel NOW! era revival of the Nova mantle. The story picks up where Volume 1 left off: Sam Alexander, a teenager from Arizona, wakes after a car crash to discover that the Nova helmet his father Jesse left behind is no legend. The Nova Corps is an interstellar police force that keeps the cosmic order, and Sam's father was once one of its members. Rocket Raccoon and Gamora of the Guardians of the Galaxy track Sam down, hand him the helmet, and begin teaching him how to use it. Sam is skeptical of the "talking, glowing" helmet and treats it as a joke at first, until it plays a holographic message left by his father and he realizes his father's stories were true. Guided by Rocket and Gamora, Sam tries out the Nova Force, learning to fly and to manipulate energy. This volume is the classic growing-up starting point of a boy who unexpectedly inherits a cosmic legacy, complete with wisecracking cosmic partners and a teenager's confusion and courage as he faces his father's secrets. For readers new to Nova, this is where they learn about the Nova Corps and this power alongside Sam.
Editor's review
