New Avengers, Volume 1 — the Chinese edition of New Avengers Vol. 1: Breakout, collecting issues #1–6 of the original English New Avengers series. The story picks up right after Avengers Disassembled: after an attack on a founding member, the Avengers fall apart — the team disbands and the mansion stands empty, and New York's super-criminals begin to stir. An unknown villain hires Electro to breach the electronic systems of the maximum-security prison known as the Raft, sparking a mass breakout of more than a hundred super-powered criminals. With no Avengers to call on, New York descends into chaos, and a group of heroes who had always fought alone are forced into an uneasy alliance: Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, and the long-retired Sentry. Amid the bloody battle to quell the riot, they gradually find a new rhythm together and ultimately fill the void left by the Avengers' dissolution. A new team is born — the New Avengers. This first volume opens the new Avengers era from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Finch, establishing the team lineup that would shape Marvel's main storyline for years to come.

Summary

If you read only one comic about what happened after Avengers Disassembled, this is the best place to start. Bendis writes superhero stories as ensemble drama: the prison riot is only the trigger, and what really grabs you is how these people — each with their own temper and secrets — are forced to sit at the same table. David Finch's art is weighty and cinematic, and the chaos at the Raft and the large-scale staging are strikingly filmic. The Chinese edition, published by World Publishing Corporation, reads smoothly and is bound for collectors; it also makes a fine first step into the Marvel comic universe. The volume collects the original issues #1–6, which together form a complete opening arc — no heavy prior reading required.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
