Summary

Based on the Yuan Shi, it weighs, revises, and recompiles the material, making it a massive modern dynastic history and an important, valuable reference work for studying the history of the Yuan dynasty. Academic circles in China and abroad have praised the work highly, commending it for gathering the achievements of various schools over more than five hundred years; it not only adds much new content but also corrects many errors. For example, the early Yuan loyalists who refused to submit to Yuan rule, and especially the leaders of the great peasant uprisings at the end of the Yuan, such as Han Lin'er, Xu Shouhui, Zhang Shicheng, and Chen Youliang, are all given individual biographies in the New Yuan History detailing their deeds. The work was completed in 1920; Xu Shichang, then President of the Republic of China, ordered it listed among the officially sanctioned histories, and it was formally printed and published in 1922.

Editor's review

The New Yuan History is a chronological-biography-style dynastic history that Ke Shaomin recompiled on the basis of the Yuan Shi. It is massive in scale, completed in 1920 and formally printed in 1922, and was listed as one of the officially sanctioned histories. Its value lies mainly in how it weighs and revises the old Yuan Shi: it adds new content, corrects old errors, and provides biographies of leaders of the late Yuan uprisings such as Han Lin'er, Xu Shouhui, Zhang Shicheng, and Chen Youliang, as well as early Yuan loyalists who refused to submit to Yuan rule, detailing their deeds and giving fuller presentation to many figures marginalized in the old history. For readers studying Yuan politics, figures, and social change, the book offers historical clues and a narrative framework for cross-reference. It is best read as a large reference work that requires patience, not light reading; ideally read it alongside the Yuan Shi and related Yuan-era sources, noting the historiography and era background behind Ke Shaomin's additions, deletions, and choices, to better appreciate its scholarly weight as a work that "gathers the achievements of various schools over more than five hundred years."

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Professional readers studying Yuan history who need to consult chronological-biography-style historical sources
  • Readers who already have a foundation in the Yuan Shi and wish to compare narratives across different histories
  • History enthusiasts interested in the deeds of late Yuan uprising leaders and early Yuan loyalists
  • Scholars and writers who need to consult Yuan-era figure biographies and related historical materials

Not a good fit for

  • General readers who only want light stories and lack the patience for classical Chinese
  • Beginners who have not yet encountered Yuan history and need an introductory guide
  • Those expecting detailed modern scholarly annotation and a fully developed retrieval system

Reading tips

  1. Read the table of contents and editorial principles first to understand the book's structure and Ke Shaomin's editorial choices, then move on to specific biographies.
  2. Read relevant sections alongside the Yuan Shi, mark additions and corrections, and form your own notes on the sources.
  3. Focus on the biographies of late Yuan uprising leaders and early Yuan loyalists to appreciate the supplementary value of its figure narratives.
  4. When encountering obstacles in classical Chinese, first use reference works to sort out names, places, and official titles, then return to the original text.

FAQ

What is the relationship between the New Yuan History and the Yuan Shi?
The New Yuan History takes the Yuan Shi as its base, weighing, revising, and recompiling it. It is not a simple transcription but builds on the old history by adding new content, correcting old errors, and adding biographies of relevant figures. Reading the two books side by side makes it easier to see Ke Shaomin's choices and intentions.
Why is this book worth consulting for those studying Yuan history?
Sources say it gathers the achievements of various schools over more than five hundred years, adding new content and correcting many errors, and it provides individual biographies of late Yuan uprising leaders such as Han Lin'er, Xu Shouhui, Zhang Shicheng, and Chen Youliang as well as early Yuan loyalists who refused to submit to Yuan rule. For studying Yuan figures and events, it is an important reference work.
Can someone without a foundation in classical Chinese read the New Yuan History?
You can try, but it requires patience and reference works. It is a chronological-biography-style dynastic history with dense classical Chinese narrative and numerous figures, places, and official titles. It is advisable to start with biographies that interest you, use annotated editions or reference works to sort out the background, and then gradually expand your reading.

About the author

柯劭忞 Author

Ke Shaomin was a modern scholar whose name is closely tied to two historical works: he took part in compiling the Draft History of the Qing (Qingshigao), and he independently completed the New History of Yuan (Xin Yuanshi). The latter especially reflects his approach to history: dissatisfied with earlier accounts of the Yuan dynasty, he gathered a wide range of sources and reorganized them, giving Yuan history a fuller narrative and a distinctive place within the tradition of official dynastic histories. Four of his works are held in this collection; besides the two histories mentioned above, there is also an edition of the New History of Yuan in ten volumes, indicating that his writings circulate mainly as historical reading. The category of folk literature may relate to his work in arranging and recording such material. Public information on his birth and death dates, native place, and life experience is limited, so no conjecture is offered here. Overall, Ke Shaomin is remembered for his historical writings, which emphasize source compilation and textual criticism and remain useful for later readers studying both the Ming history compiled in the early Qing and the history of the Yuan dynasty.
