Summary

The author believes that reading materials and texts are objective existences, and that all objective existences have patterns, and these patterns can be known. How can one understand a text? One must interpret the text according to its own patterns. This book proposes three basic laws for understanding a text. First, the law of key information guidance: an article is an organic whole, and not all words, sentences, and paragraphs are equally important; there are primary and secondary, light and heavy. The words and paragraphs that the author most wants readers to see and grasp are the keys to interpretation. By grasping these keys and following their guidance, one can accurately and quickly achieve an overall grasp of the text. Second, the law of mutual interpretation among internal factors: because any qualified text is an organic whole, the factors constituting the text have a relationship of mutual constraint and mutual illumination. Consciously interpreting a text according to this law is "using the text to explain the text." Third, the law of mutual interpretation among external factors: any text is the author's creation, and any author necessarily lives in a specific era and environment. Therefore, a text inevitably embodies the author's personal emotional attitudes and values, and inevitably contains certain influences peculiar to that era and environment. Accordingly, reading should and can use facts (facts related to the text) to explain the text, use reason (the logic of events and of writing) to explain the text, use emotion (human emotional attitudes) to explain the text, and so on. This book explains the above three laws through a large number of examples such as passages and reading test questions; it is concise, easy to understand, and useful.

Editor's review

How to Read an Article is the crystallization of Wang Junming's decades of experience in Chinese language teaching, and the quality of The Commercial Press edition ensures the rigor of its content. The book's core value lies in the fact that it does not simply list reading techniques but systematically builds a thinking framework for understanding the internal logic of an article. Mr. Wang breaks the reading process into four levels—perception, understanding, appreciation, and evaluation—and provides specific, operational methods such as "grasping key sentences," "clarifying the thread of thought," and "discerning intent." For readers long troubled by being unable to understand or fully penetrate a text, this book offers a key. It especially emphasizes the "dialogue between reader and text," guiding readers to shift from passive reception of information to active construction of meaning; this shift in perspective is crucial for improving deep reading ability. The book uses many classic textbook passages and contemporary articles as analytical cases, closely combining theory with practice so that the methodology does not remain abstract. Overall, this is a practical guide for improving core Chinese language literacy and training logical thinking; its value goes beyond exam preparation and applies to any serious reader who wishes to improve information processing and textual analysis skills.

Classified under education, the book appears from its title and category to focus on teaching and training reading methods for learners who need to improve their ability to understand and analyze texts. In the book, the author may draw on specific texts to explain how to grasp a text's structure, follow its thread of argument, and grasp the writer's intended meaning, thereby helping readers develop a workable approach to reading. Because the library holds only this one work and records no dates of birth or death, nationality, education, or career, no further account of the author's life and overall output can be given.
