Summary

Laches is an early dialogue of Plato, mainly discussing the question "what is courage?" The dialogue is set sometime after the Battle of Delium in 424 BCE: two respected Athenian generals, Laches and Nicias, together with Lysimachus and his son Melesias, discuss whom to hire to teach young men martial arts for fighting as hoplites. Socrates is invited into the discussion and immediately shifts the question from "whether we need to hire someone to teach martial arts" to a more fundamental level: is courage a kind of knowledge, a kind of fearlessness, or merely endurance? In the dialogue, Laches holds that courage is endurance of the soul, while Nicias maintains that courage is knowledge of what is and is not fearful; Socrates questions them one by one and points out that each view has its flaws, and the discussion ultimately reaches no definite conclusion. The book is short but clearly presents the typical manner of Plato's early dialogues, namely exposing difficulties in definitions through Socratic questioning and prompting readers to reflect on the foundations of everyday conceptions of virtue. This Commercial Press edition provides the Greek text with a Chinese translation, translated from Volume III of Burnet's Oxford Classical Text edition of Plato's Complete Works, and includes a glossary of names, notes, and an index, facilitating sentence-by-sentence comparative study.

Editor's review

Reading tips

  2. 读时留意拉刻斯与尼基阿斯各自的定义,以及苏格拉底对这两个定义提出的反驳
  3. 可配合《普罗泰戈拉》《美诺》等讨论德性的对话一起读,比较柏拉图对同一问题的处理
  4. 面对没有定论的结尾不必焦虑,把它当作问题起点,写下自己的“勇敢”定义再回头检视

FAQ

About the author

Plato Author · Greek

Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher. Born into an aristocratic Athenian family, he studied under Socrates, later founded the Academy, and taught Aristotle. Public sources on the details of his life are limited, and no exact dates of birth and death are recorded. He wrote mainly in dialogue form, letting figures such as Socrates examine questions through conversation—a form that is both dramatic and speculative. His works center on the theory of Forms, justice, the soul, love, and rhetoric. Representative works include the Republic, Phaedrus, Timaeus, the Apology of Socrates, and Phaedo, several of which appear in Greek-Chinese bilingual or complete Chinese translations. His thought established the fundamental questions and modes of discussion in Western philosophy and has had a profound influence on later philosophy, political theory, and education.
