Summary

After heavy snow seals off the mountains, the armed work team suffers a devastating battle: dozens of comrades lay down their lives, and ammunition runs nearly out. The villagers of the hamlets that support the Eighth Route Army are savagely retaliated against by the Japanese, and their villages are massacred one after another. Worse, the enemy springs a trap, encircling the main forces of the Eighth Route Army near Dawu Village with an iron cage tactic. In the fighting, Captain Su is killed, and Tianliu takes over the armed work team; Sha Bangcui and his companions from Dawu Village fall in battle. Old Lady Jiang, the clan matriarch, is the first to donate the coffin she had prepared for herself to bury her dead kinsmen, then amends the clan rules, calling on every able man of the clan to join the Eighth Route Army and fight the invaders to the death. However many the enemy are, however strong their fire, as long as one of us still stands, we swear not to sheath our blades until the last invader is wiped out.

Editor's review

"Disobedience 3" is the concluding volume of Zhou Jianliang's "Disobedience" series, continuing the first two books' deep exploration of history and human nature. This installment focuses on individual choices within a specific historical context, combining a grand era backdrop with finely wrought psychological portrayal to create a narrative space that is both authentic and full of tension. Zhou Jianliang's style is cool and restrained, avoiding cheap sentimentality while accumulating a powerfully moving force through understated narration. The book's value lies not only in the appeal of its story but also in its contemporary resonance with the eternal question of "obedience" versus "conscience"—when rules conflict with the inner voice of conscience, how should a person act? This is not only a question of history but a real dilemma that every individual embedded in organizations and systems may face today. From a literary standpoint, the characters are more three-dimensional, and the turns of fate are unexpected yet entirely plausible, reflecting the author's mature narrative control. For series readers, this is a long-awaited, satisfying intellectual and emotional conclusion; for new readers, it is also a serious literary work that can be read independently and provoke deep reflection.

About the author

周健良 Author

Zhou Jianliang is an author about whom limited public information is available. The existing records confirm only that four works are listed under this name: Kanging 1, Kanging 2, Kanging 3, and the Kanging (1-3 boxed set), which can be regarded as separate volumes and a collected edition of the same series. Judging from the common categories, Zhou Jianliang's writing mainly falls under "otherworld continent" and "war and military" fiction, suggesting that the stories are often set in imaginary worlds and revolve around military and combat plots, combining otherworldly imagination with military narrative. The representative works are concentrated in the Kanging series, which is also the core clue for understanding the author's writing. Because information such as dates of birth and death, nationality, and English name remains unconfirmed, this entry makes no inferences about the author's personal experience, educational background, or writing career. Readers should rely primarily on these four works and their categories when learning about Zhou Jianliang; further information remains to be made public.
