About the author
Wu Meidian is an author about whom very little is publicly known: no clear records survive of his place of origin, dates of birth and death, or personal experience. The only confirmed fact is that a single work, Bamboo-Branch Songs of Huicheng, is attributed to him. The bamboo-branch song (zhuzhici) is a poetic form rooted in folk ballads, usually written as sequences that portray local scenery, everyday urban life, and popular customs in plain, lively language. Judging by its title, Bamboo-Branch Songs of Huicheng takes the old city of Huizhou as its subject and belongs to the tradition of recording local life through this form; it offers some reference value for understanding the social life and customs of Huicheng in earlier times. Because records are scarce, the circumstances of the book's composition, its printing and circulation, and the author's other writings remain to be investigated. Given the limited material available, readers may regard this work as a sample of regional bamboo-branch song writing, whose value lies chiefly in its combination of subject and form.
