Summary

Weak Song is almost the verdict later generations have reached on the Song Dynasty: the Northern and Southern Song long confronted the Liao, Western Xia, Jin, and Mongols, signed a series of humiliating treaties, were destroyed by the Jin and then the Yuan, and produced few military achievements in expanding territory. Starting from this stereotype, this book reexamines the 319-year history of the Northern and Southern Song and argues that the so-called Weak Song was in fact a Prosperous Song, one that reached the peak of ancient Chinese civilization in state governance, institutional culture, literature and art, and the spirit of the literati. The book is divided into four parts. Part One, The Song Emperors, evaluates the emperors of the Northern and Southern Song one by one, from Emperor Taizu Zhao Kuangyin to Emperor Lizong, and also covers palace women such as Liu E and the two empresses, pointing out that although the two Songs had few great rulers, they never produced a tyrant, which was an important reason for their long-lasting dynastic fortune. Part Two, The Peak of Civil Governance, discusses literati politics, the ancestral family laws, the censorial system, the practice of snatching grooms at the examination results, the absence of eunuch disasters in the two Songs, the rise of Neo-Confucianism, the spread of elementary education, and the downward diffusion of culture, sketching a highly mature civil-service politics and Song-style culture. Part Three, The Fighting Dynasty, recounts the wars and peace between Song and Liao, the Yang family generals, the century-long Song-Xia war, the hereditary feud between Song and Jin, Yue Fei and the Battle of Caishi, Yu Jie's administration of Sichuan, and finally the last battle at Yamen, presenting the other side of the Song: rising through war and perishing through war. Part Four, The Spirit of the Literati, uses figures such as Fan Zhongyan, Ouyang Xiu, Bao Zheng, Sima Guang, Wang Anshi, Su Shi, Su Song, Liu Anshi, Zhu Xi, Lu You, and Xin Qiji as threads to portray the integrity and fate of Song literati who took the world as their own responsibility. The author breaks up and reorganizes historical facts in accessible language, combining narration and commentary, offering both observations on institutional history and judgments on the fate of individuals, and attempts to answer a core question: how did a dynasty repeatedly frustrated in military affairs reach its culmination in civilizational terms?

Editor's review

About the author

陈胜利 Author

Public information about Chen Shengli is limited; all that is currently known is that two of his works are held in the collection, covering the fields of software learning and industrial technology. Among them, SOLIDWORKS 2020 Product Design Basic Skills Training (3rd Edition) is an operation-training book on 3D CAD software, aimed at readers from beginners to intermediate users in product design and emphasizing the combination of command explanations with hands-on exercises. Motion Control Systems: Application and Practice leans toward the engineering application of automation and motion control technology, focusing on how control principles are implemented in real systems. The two works differ considerably in subject matter—one centering on a design tool, the other on control engineering—yet both reflect a technical writing approach oriented toward practice and stressing operation and application. Based on the available information, Chen Shengli's writing tends to be tutorial-style and engineering-oriented, suitable for readers who need hands-on practice. More public information is needed to fill in his personal background, professional identity, and career experience.
