Blood of the General

A historical power-struggle epic written over seven years and nearly six million characters. What is rare is that the author never slides into the routine of "technology boosting and farming development," but honestly writes about war, armies, and how a dynasty establishes itself by the sword. The author's historical foundation is quite solid: the campaigns against Shu, Western Xia, Jin, and Mongolia are reasoned out in an organized way; in details, the descriptions of weapons such as modao, divine-arm bows, and bed crossbows, as well as the explanations of marching, supply, and scouts, are thoroughly researched. The protagonist Zhao Shi is not a morally perfect man, and is even rather cold-blooded, but the author does not look down on that era with modern superiority; instead, he writes a kind of "valiant old Qin" character and the pragmatic survival philosophy of the Han people. This ability to write out the character of a group and a nation is not common in web novels. The flaws are also obvious: the pace drags in the middle and later stages, the writing occasionally has filler, and the emotional line is weak. But if you want a truly grand alternate-history work with the battlefield as its main stage, it deserves a place on your shelf.
