Summary

In the late Ming dynasty, society was in turmoil as warlords vied for power. Daoist practitioners emerged from their mountains in the chaotic times, while heterodox sects seized the opportunity to wreak havoc across the land. To defend the reputation of Daoism, the orthodox schools and the heretical Tianshan sect met in a decisive battle. Both sides suffered grievous losses at Tianshan and withdrew to recover. Unexpectedly, true qi disturbed the Stargazing Cave at Tianshan, scattering all nine treasures across the mortal world. To recover the treasures, a true adept must serve as a guide. Both orthodox and heretical factions sent agents into hiding among the people to seek those capable of finding the treasures. Over two hundred years later, in the late Qing and early Republic, a lone-star of misfortune descends, and the protagonist is born, managing the family antique shop. Both factions calculate the protagonist's identity, and the forces of all sides surge into motion.

Editor's review

Xun Long spans the long stretch from the late Ming to the late Qing and early Republic, using the thread of "nine treasures scattered from the Stargazing Cave at Tianshan" to link more than two centuries of covert struggle between the orthodox and heretical factions. Author Zhi Dian Jiang Shan does not devote the entire narrative to combat; instead, through the rise and fall of Daoist lineages, the tracking of treasures, and the daily life of an antique shop, he unfolds a panorama in which the jianghu of chaotic times intertwines with ordinary existence. The protagonist's fate as a lone-star of misfortune gives the treasure hunt a sense of destiny from the outset, and as both factions spring into action, the suspense builds layer upon layer. For readers who enjoy traditional Daoist themes yet are weary of relentlessly fast-paced power-fantasy fiction, this book is steadier in rhythm and dense in information, suited to sustained reading in quiet hours as one pieces the whole picture together clue by clue. One caveat: the story involves multiple factions and a long temporal span, and the early chapters require some patience to sort out the relationships.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Readers who enjoy traditional jianghu themes such as Daoist sects, treasure hunts, and orthodox-versus-heretical conflict
  • Readers who prefer slow-burn, multi-faction narrative fiction
  • Those interested in the late Ming through early Republic setting and willing to follow a long-running mystery
  • Readers who enjoy growth stories in which a protagonist with a special fate rises from the marketplace into turbulent events

Not a good fit for

  • Readers of fast-paced power fantasy who want a climax from the very first page
  • Readers unaccustomed to multi-threaded characters and cross-era narration who may confuse relationships
  • Readers looking only for pure romance or urban fiction

Reading tips

  1. Clarify the basic setup of the two factions and the nine treasures before entering the main plot; reading will go more smoothly.
  2. There are many characters early on; jot down faction affiliations and key figures to avoid confusion later.
  3. Best read continuously rather than in fragmented skips; the long-running mystery requires sustained memory.
  4. When treasure clues appear, consider revisiting earlier foreshadowing for more puzzle-solving pleasure.

FAQ

I've never read Daoist-themed fiction. Can I start with this one?
Yes. The story begins with the Battle of Tianshan in the late Ming and explains the origins of the two factions and the scattering of the treasures, so new readers can follow the main line. The early chapters do involve many factions and characters, however, and require a little patience to sort out the relationships.
When does the protagonist formally appear?
The story first recounts the Battle of Tianshan and the scattering of the treasures over two hundred years earlier, then moves to the late Qing and early Republic, when the protagonist is born and takes charge of the antique shop. Only after the protagonist appears do the two factions begin acting around his identity; the early groundwork serves what follows.
Is there much romance in this book?
From the available material, the story centers on Daoist conflict, the treasure hunt, and the power struggle between orthodox and heretical factions, with the protagonist's fate as a lone-star of misfortune and the maneuvering of all sides as the main line. Romance is not emphasized in the synopsis, so readers seeking pure romance should take note.

About the author

纸点江山 Author

Zhi Dian Jiangshan is a web-fiction author about whom little public information is available. The only work currently traceable to this name is Xunlong (Seeking the Dragon), which falls under the category of otherworld-continent fiction. Since basic details such as nationality, dates of birth and death, and an English name are not found in public sources, it is difficult to outline the author's personal background or creative trajectory. Judging from the genre of Xunlong, the work is built on the familiar framework of otherworld-continent fiction, which typically involves the geography and power structures of an imagined world and a main storyline of growth and adventure; within this genre the author attempts to construct a narrative space of their own. A single work is not enough to reveal a stable overall writing style, but it does suggest a preference for fantasy world-building. Information on the author's output, stage of writing, and reader response remains very limited and awaits supplementation through more works or public details.
