Summary

This book gathers the popular medical writing that Song Nanchang, a renowned physician from Nanchang, published in the Family Doctor Newspaper and nearly 20 other periodicals since the 1980s. The articles cover common and frequently occurring conditions, such as arthralgia, pain disorders and paralysis, and also promote specialized techniques (acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, bloodletting, physiotherapy and external application of Chinese medicine) and the use of specific formulas and drugs, along with replies to patients' letters of inquiry. Published as a summary of the author's more than 30 years of medical popularization work, it seeks to engage fully with fellow practitioners and patients and to offer readers valuable medical knowledge. It also presents new techniques and projects. It is concise, easy to understand, convenient in sourcing materials, simple to perform, and safe and effective.

Editor's review

This book is a collection of medical science articles by Dr. Song Nanchang written over more than thirty years, most of which were published in nearly twenty newspapers and periodicals, including Family Doctor News, explaining the prevention and treatment of common and frequently occurring diseases to general readers. The content focuses on specific conditions such as arthralgia syndrome, pain disorders, and paralysis, and also covers the application and promotion of special methods and specific formulas and drugs, including acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, pricking bloodletting, physical therapy, and external application of Chinese medicines, as well as responses to patients' letters of inquiry. The book is convenient in sourcing materials, simple to operate, safe and effective, and written in concise, plain language that is easy to understand. It can serve as reference reading for grassroots medical workers and TCM enthusiasts, and is also suitable for ordinary families to consult when encountering related health problems. It should be read as a popular-science handbook to which one can turn for advice at any time, rather than a systematic textbook; for specific procedures, professional guidance should still be sought.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Ordinary readers with chronic conditions such as arthralgia syndrome, pain disorders, and paralysis who wish to understand TCM approaches to treatment
  • Grassroots medical workers and village doctors who need simple, convenient, inexpensive, and effective reference materials on external TCM therapies
  • TCM enthusiasts who want to learn about commonly used special methods such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping through popular-science articles
  • Middle-aged and older readers who are used to reading health columns in newspapers and prefer short articles

Not a good fit for

  • Students at TCM colleges who wish to systematically study TCM theory and need a complete textbook system
  • Readers seeking treatment plans for acute and critical illnesses or hoping to replace proper medical care on their own
  • Professional researchers who prefer rigorous evidence-based medical literature and require extensive data and references

Reading tips

  1. Start by selecting from the disease-based table of contents the chapters relevant to oneself or family members; there is no need to read from beginning to end
  2. When reading about procedures such as moxibustion, cupping, and bloodletting, first confirm the technique against professional demonstrations before trying it
  3. Read the patient inquiry section as case studies, paying attention to how the doctor approaches the questions rather than merely memorizing conclusions
  4. Take notes on commonly used specific formulas and drugs and everyday health care content for easy reference later

FAQ

Can the methods in this book be done at home by oneself?
The book's content is mainly popular science. Procedures such as acupuncture and pricking bloodletting are somewhat specialized and should not be performed based on the text alone. Even relatively simple methods such as moxibustion, cupping, and external application of Chinese medicines should first be guided by professional medical personnel, confirming indications and contraindications before use; safety must always come first.
The articles in the book were published rather early; might the content be outdated?
Most of these articles were written after the 1980s and are popular-science summaries; their understanding of common conditions and simple external treatment approaches still have reference value. However, medical knowledge is constantly updated, and regarding specific diagnosis, medication, and new techniques, current clinical standards and the opinions of professional doctors should prevail.
Can ordinary readers without a TCM background understand it?
Yes. The book draws on popular-science newspaper articles, is written in concise, plain language that is easy to understand, and explains specialized disease names and procedures, making it suitable for readers with no background to read by disease type. Unfamiliar technical terms can be understood from context without affecting overall comprehension.
