Summary

This book is a Peking University approved textbook. (1) Authors: the authors are on average under forty; compared with their predecessors, they have more orthodox educational backgrounds, more solid academic training, and more complete knowledge structures, and are able to consciously distance themselves from political discourse and move toward proper legal scholarship. (2) Structure: macroscopically the book follows the structure of the Chinese constitutional text, while microscopically it turns the headings in the main text into questions of widespread reader concern, so that in form the whole book exists to answer readers' questions. (3) Content: the book takes the Chinese Constitution as its starting point rather than emphasizing Western systems, is practical rather than theory-centered, and is student-centered rather than centered on the authors' research interests.

Editor's review

As a Peking University approved textbook, this book's most distinctive feature is that it draws constitutional knowledge back from abstract theory to the Chinese constitutional text itself. The author team, with a relatively pure legal-scholarship orientation, avoids empty political discourse; structurally it follows the constitutional text while designing the main-text headings as questions readers commonly care about, making the reading process more like a guided question-and-answer exercise. In content it takes the Chinese Constitution as its starting point, is practical in orientation, and is student-centered, making it suitable for classroom teaching and self-study reference. For readers who need to build a basic framework of constitutional law and understand China's constitutional arrangements, this book offers a clear entry point; for those with some foundation, its question-based structure can also help sort out gaps in knowledge. Reading it alongside the constitutional provisions yields better results.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Undergraduate law students who need a course textbook closely tied to the Chinese constitutional text
  • Readers preparing for constitutional law exams or coursework who need question-oriented knowledge review
  • Non-specialist readers interested in constitutional institutions who wish to begin with the Chinese constitutional text
  • Law teachers who may use its question-based format to organize classroom discussion

Not a good fit for

  • Professional researchers seeking systematic study of Western constitutional theory and comparative constitutional depth
  • General leisure readers looking for abundant case stories and an easy reading experience
  • Readers with a deep foundation in constitutional law seeking cutting-edge monographs on specialized topics

Reading tips

  1. First read the corresponding chapter of the constitutional text, then read the related question in this book to form a comparative memory.
  2. Take notes by the book's question headings and, after each section, answer that question in your own words.
  3. Read chapter by chapter alongside course progress, and use the end-of-book questions to check mastery after class.
  4. When encountering institutional concepts, return to the constitutional provisions to locate them, avoiding memorizing conclusions detached from the text.

FAQ

Is this book suitable for self-studying constitutional law from zero?
Fairly suitable. The book uses the Chinese constitutional text as its structural skeleton and sets main-text headings as questions of widespread reader concern; its orientation is student-centered and practical, so beginners can gradually build a framework by following the questions in order. Constitutional law still has a certain conceptual density, however; it is advisable to keep a copy of the constitutional provisions at hand for comparison, and when encountering unfamiliar institutional terms, check the provisions first and then reread—this works more reliably.
How is this book different from ordinary constitutional law textbooks?
According to the materials, macroscopically the book follows the structure of the Chinese constitutional text, while microscopically it turns the main-text headings into questions of widespread reader concern, so that in form the whole book exists to answer readers' questions; in content it takes the Chinese Constitution as its starting point rather than emphasizing Western systems, and is practical rather than theory-centered. It is therefore more a question-oriented textbook close to the Chinese constitutional text.
Will non-law readers find it difficult?
There is a certain threshold, but it is not unreadable. The book is student-centered and practical, and the question-style headings lower the barrier to entry. Non-specialist readers can first read the original constitutional provisions, then read selectively in question order, skipping overly technical passages and focusing on understanding the basic arrangements of state institutions and the section on citizens' rights and duties; proceeding step by step is enough.

About the author

张千帆 Author

Zhang Qianfan: public information is limited, and only several works related to constitutional law are known. His representative work, Lecture Notes on Constitutional Law, is presented as an academic textbook; there are also Constitution and Constitution (Second Edition), which presumably deal with the basic principles and institutions of constitutional law and serve legal teaching and study. The library also includes An English Course for Information Management Majors (with complete audio, 3rd Edition), indicating that his writing extends beyond law to specialized English teaching materials. Overall, his works are mainly textbooks and lecture notes intended for classroom and self-study readers, with an emphasis on organizing knowledge and explaining systems, and may serve as reference materials for constitutional law teaching and English teaching in information management.
