Summary

The "Chinese Culture Knowledge Reader" series is a large-scale knowledge series organized by Jilin Literature and History Press and Jilin Publishing Group Co., Ltd., with contributions from renowned Chinese experts and scholars, aimed at disseminating China's five-thousand-year fine traditional culture and enhancing the cultural cultivation of the general public.

Editor's review

Song Dynasty Famous Kilns is a professional work that systematically examines Song dynasty ceramic art. With rigorous scholarship, author Li Xin provides an in-depth analysis of the craft characteristics, aesthetic evolution, and cultural connotations of the five great Song kilns (Ru, Guan, Ge, Jun, and Ding) as well as numerous important folk kilns. Rather than a simple compilation of plates, the book constructs a three-dimensional and vivid picture of Song dynasty porcelain-making from multiple perspectives: kiln-site archaeology, body and glaze recipes, firing techniques, forms and decoration, historical context, literati taste, and overseas trade. It cites archaeological reports and documentary sources extensively and includes selected high-resolution detail images, enabling readers to grasp the overall character of Song ceramics at the macro level while observing its refinements at the micro level. For ceramics enthusiasts, the book offers a reliable framework of connoisseurship knowledge; for art historians, it presents a profound case study of the interaction between craft technology and the spirit of the age. Its plain, restrained narrative avoids excessive romanticization, demonstrating particular rational value amid today's collecting boom.

FAQ

What is the main difference between this book and common porcelain appreciation picture books?
This book focuses more on in-depth interpretation from the integrated perspectives of archaeology, craft history, and art history, rather than mainly displaying fine images. It provides systematic knowledge background, technical analysis, and cultural interpretation, aiming to help readers understand the manufacturing logic and spirit of the age behind the objects.
Does the book cover authentication of porcelain?
The book's main purpose is academic synthesis and interpretation of aesthetics and culture, not an authentication manual. By explaining the typical features, craft standards, and historical evolution of each kiln, it provides readers with a scientific basis for appreciation, but it does not offer specific market authentication techniques or mnemonic formulas.
Will non-specialist readers find this book difficult?
The author strives for clear, plain prose, and key terms are explained. Anyone with some interest in traditional Chinese culture who is willing to follow the author's logic step by step can read it smoothly. The rich images and specific object descriptions also effectively aid understanding. Readers are advised to skim first, then read closely the parts that interest them.
